I think it makes sense for Mazda to try them out on piston engines first, as piston engines are, admittedly, a more tried design.

After a deep view of patent, my opinion is that this one was a possible solution of development discarded in favor of Skyactiv-X layout showed few days before the publication of this patent .
Some tech of this patent can be used in diesel engines, high performance versions of gas piston engines and eventually rotary (e.g. supercharging system)
