It's pitch black outside atm, but I can definitely add pictures, especially if this generates any interest.
The short story is the oil seal is blown and would need a rebuild. The long story is below.
I'm located around College Station and could get the car to any of the major TX cities (HOU,SA, Austin, Dallas) if needed. It still technically runs for now, but I would not consider it "running" for buying purposes.
Cosmetics:
Both front and rear bumper have some cosmetic damage. The front bumper has a crease at the level of the Mazda symbol where it was hit at about walking pace. It is not too noticeable. The rear bumper has a more offensive defect on the passenger corner caused by a concrete pole. It would need pulled and painted, but is only cosmetic and doesn't touch the tail light.
The interior is in okay condition. The passenger dash is cracked and there are definite signs of wear from a daily-driven 14 yr old car, but nothing critical.
Mechanical:
Blown oil seal and anything it took with it will be your main problem.
The only other known mechanical issue is related to the fuel evap system. It throws the code for large leak.
Recently Replaced Items (1yr; 10k mi or less):
- Continental Extreme Contact (~200 mi)
- BHR Midpipe
- Exedy Stock Clutch
- ACT Flywheel
- BHR Mounts
- BHR ignition Coils
- Alternater
- N1Z Starter
- Spark Plugs (just replaced, would recommend replacing again after rebuild)
- Battery
- Housings
- Irons
- E-Shaft
Backstory:
My rx8 is at about 115k miles. It was rebuilt a year ago with pretty much all new parts- i think the rotors were about all that was re-used. That failure was due to a bad cat which was because bad ignition coils. All of these were replaced at the rebuild and several other QOL or maintenance items were done (BHR midpipe, BHR ignition, clutch, flywheel, engine mounts).
I found out this weekend that the engine has been devouring oil. What I thought was a bad sender was critically low oil (reading 0 pressure at idle). I wasn't expecting this because I had not seen any oil leaks and it has a SOHN adapter (also no overheating/seizing), so there should be no consumption. I also last replaced the oil a couple thousand miles ago and didn't notice anything, but wasn't looking either. Well, after replacing the oil and the spark plugs, that were completely coated in buildup, the car dumped white smoke on start-up and continues to do so at a moderate level (noticeable, but not billowing)

Agreed, and I think everyone knows there's no telling the condition of things inside the engine until it's on a bench in pieces and cleaned up. Always best to assume total loss and be happy if it gets better.
I'm mainly posting this on the off chance someone can use it as is and wants to throw an offer. In the likely event that doesn't happen I'll reevaluate.
