Why are the resale prices so low?
Better yet...... Why are so many people willing to take a huge financial hit while selling their 8?
The MSRP for the 2005 models is pretty high IMO.
I went to the South Florida Auto Show last month and was a bit shocked by the sticker prices.
They had a 2005 automatic for $35,000 MSRP.

As for that price for an auto '05- that's just friggin' insane... nobody is going to pay that for the low power 4speed that mazda is currently peddling in the 8. My 6 speed with everything... and I mean everything MSRP'd for just a hair over that over a year ago.

uh. That must have been a fully decked out RX-8. My car was 6MT, GT, Navi, and nothing else, MSRP on it was 32,000 range. If you add on all the little crap options, 6 disk changer, and maybe a few dealer installed items and I can see the MSRP going to 35k, but just barely.
Resale suffers because people aren't paying MSRP on the car, they are able to buy at invoice. Add in the huge incentives, ranging from the $3500 lease incentives previously available, to the $3,000 under invoice people have been buying older 2004 cars... and you'll see why used RX-8's aren't going for all that much.

$35,000 for a RX8 is crazy!!! The car goes for $27-$32,000 so I don't understand what you could put into it to take it to the 35's or 38's. The RX8 is a sports car so I would never pay $35,000 for it unless it was making 350HP. What I mean is I'm not going to pay more money for leather, chrome rims, body kits...that make the RX8 slower.
A $27,000 RX8 is just as fast or slightly faster than a $35,000 RX8 and retains 98% of the looks...what's the purpose of spending more then???
I have seen that they are taking a HUGE hit in selling price after being used and can't understand it too well? First, for a car that just came out there sure are alot of them used out there. The price people are willing to pay for them used (includeing me) is in the low 20's. I think most people don't know much about the car or are giving in to the few bad points about the car so there just aint much demand for them used at least.
Time will tell...

rx8wannahave, what works for you may not work for someone else. By your logic, it would be stupid to buy anything other than the base model car, ever. But there are options available because not everyone is in the same situation as you, or has the same needs.
Options are good.

Well--if someone buys an auto for $35K then they are just a boulavard cruiser--in fact the only reason why I got the auto was cause of the deal I got on it with the options. If it weren't for the savings I would have gone str8 to 6spd. Overall, I'm content with my purchase.

I would love to keep my 8 instead of taking a big hit on it, but I have to reduce expenses in order to return to school. I think g8rboy is right on about the 8 being a specialty car. The rotary may have been around for a while, but being exclusively Mazda and foreign in its inner workings to most people, its not a car just anyone will drive.
I need to sell mine as soon as possible, which is the reason I'm not waiting until Spring to sell it. This isn't exactly the best time to sell any car.
With that said... my 8 is still listed under the classified section! :-)

Well, I wouldn't mind selling mine, mainly because of the gas mileage issue. I never expected to get 18 and 24 but I get 11-13 in the city and 14-15 combined driving. My friends '05 V8 mustang gets better mileage than that. I bet a lot of 8 drivers are selling because of the mileage issue.
Plus, the 8 is a higher maintenance car than many are used to, myself included.
It's too bad too, because mileage aside, it's a very nice car. I'll try to get that fixed, although the dealers I keep talking to are no help. If I can't get it fixed, then I'll aggressively move to sell it sometime next year, I hope.

the reason the 8s don't have any resale value is because they don't have any street cred. saturn had that same problem when they first came out and scion is having it now! give it time. the car has to prove itself before the value can be retained. that's how it is with any first year model.

I don't aggree with that...if you mean "not big with the civic mod types" then fime, I'll grant you that.
I think the prices are more regionaled...just like they seem to be for the deals people get on new cars. In my market the values are holding up very well.

let me clairify, i am refering to the total value of the car. how will it hold up in 3yrs? 5 yrs? cadillacs have horrible resale because of recalls and poor quality. don't get me wrong i think the 8 is incredible. i am not refering to the fast and furious wannabe street seen cred. i mean like consumer reports ced. what is their opinion of the cars long term value? the magazine articles will help with its resale value everytime they say something good about it. i used to have an isuzu trooper, i loved that vehicle, it took every thing i threw at it and got out of some nasty mud holes but because of a bad news report on the dangers of rollovers my trusty trooper was depreciating faster then i could pay it off.

I like how leather looks, but the weight (probably very little), maintenance, how they heat up (I'm in FL), and their lack of grip makes them un appealing TO ME.
NAV is cool but not 100% needed, I got a MAP...
Body kits are welcome
Let me just summerize it, options are good but some IN MY opinion do not interest me.
I think the poor fuel economy and rotary have some people scared. Also, some of the people that felt cheated by the 247HP figure were not too happy either. Overall, this does not scare me enough and I have decided to give the 8 a chance.
This will be either my first rotary to love, or the first and last one. Time will tell...
Note: If anything, I' stick a strong V6 or small V8 in the sucker....LOL

i agree with rx8wannahave. i purchased the base manual. i don't like leather seats, i don't need a nav system i don't care for the stock spoiler etc...but that's just me. if you want to pay for these things for the next few years then that's just you. if i decide i like something later i will get it. why can't we all just get along?

I had a copy of intellichoice (not sure what month it was). The magazine rates all catagories including "value" catagories and the RX8 was right up there with Mercedes for the ablity for the car to hold its value at the end of a lease.
this is a link to some info on their site...ita not as comprehensive as the magazine
By going here you can compare it to other cars:

Well IMHO new Rx-8's are way too expensive. A well equiped car going for over 30k is not worth it to me--especially when 2005 Mustangs can be had for under 25k. Don't get me wrong--I'm a diehard rotary fan (16 years so far) and would love to buy an 8 but the high price has definitely got me looking at other cars.
The same thing happened to the Rx-7, Mazda priced themselves out of the market. The 7 used to be the poor man's Porsche, but by the time the FD rolled along, the price was over many what many people would pay--and sales suffered real bad.
I know you guys don't like it--but for me it's good the prices for resale are comming down, maybe in a few years I'll give my son my FB and get a nice used Rx-8.

For what you get, the RX-8 isn't all that much. If you're looking at just performance numbers, then a neon is in your future, but luckly people, and car companies have more logic than that. One size does not fit all.
If the RX-8 was in the 40k range, I might agree with you, but with an average US vehicle costing in the 30k range, it's not like Mazda is asking for an arm and a leg. Also consider a base RX-8 can be had for 22k which has the same engine as the 30k model.

I think the dude who revived this thread:
1. Has "sort by date" upside down (over the past few days he's resurrected threads from 2002 or 2003)
2. Doesn't know how to (or where to) read the date-posted.
3. If he's willing to pay $28k for a 2005 automatic, give me 4 hours and I can convert mine back to an auto and sell it to him. Profit. ha ha.
