20 Most Dangerous Vehicles on the Road today.
An interesting story came up over on Digg today about the most dangerous vehicles on the road and they had an interesting quote to start the article.
No wonder we all passed on that thing. :P
For the full article, go HERE.
"For example, the Nissan 350Z has a death rate that's about double that of the average sports car."

Some of those ratings don't make sense...It seems like some of the cars fared really well, but since they weren't 5-stars across the board, they were "dangerous."

"...the 350Z is part of a group of vehicles that tends to be driven by younger, less experienced or riskier drivers, and stands out for having high death rates, through no particular fault of the car."

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety is an ad-hoc agency with absolutely zero credibility.
Notice the same message in the top 20 list - no side airbags standard.
These are the same people who 10 years ago advocated keeping insurance rates low on pickups and SUV's due to the safety they offered their own occupants.
These are the same people who aggresively campaigned the major players Allstate, State Farm, Nationwide, Farmers and a handful of others to keep the insurance rates higher on sports cars like the Corvette despite their much lower cost to insure ratios. The reasoning was that high performance sports cars were luxuries and could be used to offset the cost of insurance of the aging fleet of mini-pickups - many of which were riding around uninsured.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety would better serve mankind if they moved to Iraq.

Well, thanks for that tid bit of info on the IIHS, but I think they would be better in India crashing the G-Wiz or something. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=quHzOK9chx8
I still want to tell my coworker the following quote, because she always tells me I should have just bought a pick up truck. I don't know @#$ why but she does...
"Pickups are another surprisingly unsafe group of vehicles. Based on fatality-rate data, they're by far the most dangerous, says Michael Dulberger, president of the safety advocacy group Informed for Life."

It seems most of the cars on this list are cheaper cars, and the criteria for safety isn't crash results but how many airbags the vehicle has. Seems like they just needed an article and told one of the interns to whip something up fast.

The statement by Toyota if full of it. I am a Toyota salesman and they never instructed us to tout the advantages of side airbags unless the vehicle has it. If it is so important to Toyota, the why was the 2008 and 2007 Corollas unavailable in the South East district. If a customer wanted side airbags in a Corolla we had order from the factory. There was none ever available from NC to FL.
