Looking at a 1979 924 today,Have some Q's
Ok so, some time back I expressed my interest in a old school Porsche.
So I called this guy that has a add in the paper about a 5 speed 1979 924 Porsche. He said it runs great. He said if you buy it I would repaint it. I.M.O. it just needs a new paint job cuz the hood is kinda faded lol
What I found out about the car;
Guess I should look into the Audi Engine yeah?
So I'm going to look at it today. The guy is asking $1,500.00 O.B.O. I'm going to low ball him $1,300.00
I dont know. What do you guys think? what should I look out for? and what are the pros and cons?

"The 1979 924 aka 931 Porsche was ment to be a VW. VW went on to assemble the 924 @ their Audi plant (VW owns or owned Audi). Porsche had their last say."

that's a 928. i had a 924 and it was nothing but trouble with the fuel pump. i sold it for $1500 back in 1995 but i guess it can only depreciate so much from there. the body is much closer to an SA/FB RX7 or a 944 without the wide body flared back.

Hah! I'm running into that problem too! Did yours keep randomly stalling in warmer weather? Mine ran GREAT in the cold winter...but since spring...bleh. I am replacing the DME relay (fuel pump relay) this week...as that is a known part that goes bad.

Man i'm glad I'm not the only one. With the exception of one time, it has always started right back...but it just sucks. Hopefully that DME relay fixes it...aside from that it's been a GREAT winter car for me.

Depending on the condition of the 924, I would at least try to stretch to a 944 for a little more money if possible if your dead-set on a an old school Porsche. I believe Porsche added their own engine (a 2.5 I4?) and upgraded and improved many things when evolving the 924 to the 944. I thought the original 924's VW/Audi engine was always problematic - maybe it's just the fuel pump?

shoot, you might be able to find a 928 for a couple grand more, who needs a 4 when you can have a V8?
Way off topic and definitely more expensive, but if it was me and I wanted an old school Porsche I'd try hunting down a 959 or 935.

Depends on which batch. If a 959 from the second batch were to come to market I bet it would fetch over 1 million.
I'm not sure if Canary was joking or not, but if he wasn't he either needs to brush up on his Porsche knowledge or is far to wealthy to be driving an RX-8... Also, the 935 was not a road going car though it was based on the 930.

The 924 was just plain junk.
The 944 is much better, but little things like steering system leaks will take lots of nickels and dimes.
The 928 is awesome probably the second best touring car ever built. Plan on using a stout wheelbarrow to tote the nicles and dimes that one will cost.
A second Gen RX7 is a good choice.

If you don't have a couple grand extra then don't bother with a Porsche. There are few things more expensive than a cheap Porsche.
FWIW: previous owner of a pristine '89 944 Turbo and waiting for prices on used Caymans to come down.
