That's a nice design, but it has no basis in reality. Most of us think the 16x is more like 280-300 hp. If it's a 2+2, it is an RX-8, regardless of what they call it. If it's a 2-seater it's a home run IMHO. It all depends on the price of gas.

why do they always have to write these with such a *storied* tone, makes it feel like fiction. but reading to the end it kinda makes sense, to replace the 8 w/ a traditional 2+2. the kabura, after all, was a very attractive design and it'd be a shame (and a bit strange) to totally scrap it
and looks like we can expect the z to keep getting uglier and uglier

Well, it's true that I do care more what it looks like than what it's called. But I still say just build it 'cause I'd like to see Mazda continue developing the rotary in a pure sports car. But if I had to guess, I think it will look more like the Kabura.

This seems to be in line with past Mazda practices. For those that remember the 1st gen RX-7 was revamped with a special version (GSL-SE) in its final 2 years of production, 1984 + 85 which included the 13B engine.
Then in 86 they introduced the 2nd gen with a 13B.
Sounds like a repeat 25 years later.. Different version of the RX-8 in its final 2 years, 2009 +10, then in 2011 they re-introduce it as a new model.
My guess is Mazda will name it the RX-8, especially if they keep with the 2+2 concept.

I've been reading car mags for years. A lot of these "sources" put out all kinds of stories about cars that never come to fruition. It's worse now that these things can be photoshopped, chopped, sliced and diced. In the old days, there were "artist's conceptions" usually by the brilliant Mark Stehrenberger. He drew plenty of cars that never even made it into clay.
While I don't doubt the RX-8's "days are numbered"- I hardly expect them to keep building it forever- this article really tells you nothing.
