clogged cat and dead coils?
so my cat is clogged and i think my coils are dead. My cat has been clogged for awhile now but the other day while i was driving my 8 started accelerating real slow and then my cel came on. my friend looked up the code for the cel and said my car misfired and most likely its the coils. So my question is is are my coils bad and is there any other way to NOT buy a new cat. My friend said theres a way that the dealership can clean the cat but i never heard of it before so if anyone can help me please lemme know asap. I'm growing more and more frustrated with my rx8.

If you knew your cat was clogged for a while, then you should have taken care of the problem instead of driving the car like that. Helps to lessen the frustration.
As it was said, bad coils will kill the cat, so best is to replace them, especially if you never did that and you have a lot of miles on the car.
Regarding the cat, there is federal emissions warranty that covers it for 80K or so miles, I forgot the exact number. If you are below that, get it replaced by the dealer with an OEM cat under warranty.

Yeah I was gonna replace my coils but the dealership said that they didn't need to be changed so all we did was just change plugs n wires. When we changed it I also mentioned that I thought the cat was clogged and they were questioning me like how do u know, what makes u think it is, if no cel are on then it doesn't need replacing. This was all said and done when I was under 80k. Now I'm over it so regardless I gotta buy it myself. is it better to get an oem cat or just buy aftermarket cat exhaust system. They quoted me 1k+ to get a new cat

I just gutted mine and put it back on. I think the O2 sensor was fried anyway when it posted its farewell CEL before the cat went to ****. But thats ok because now i don't have a cel which means i should be able to pass inspection. I'll warn you though, the smell is quite strong, I like it but you'll hear comments from others about it. Oh yeah, and go ahead and replace your coils. I did mine with no problems and I didn't even have to remove my stock airbox like it says in the DIY coil replacement thread.
