Left turns difficult (not EPS)

Left turns difficult (not EPS)
I have a 2005 MT up on jack-stands troubleshooting a steering problem. At first I thought it was the notorious EPS harness, but it is not a PS issue. In fact, the power steering masks it substantially when on.
When wheels are turned left, it is difficult to turn the wheel in either direction. Something seems to be grinding and binding, but I cannot identify the source. This is with the power disconnected.
This car had a collision in the past, and I know one of the tie rods is slightly bent.
I guess it is probably the rack, but is any adjustment possible? Would adjusting the steering gear do anything? Is it possible the steering column is binding?
Followup questions appreciated, I'm having a hard time describing this problem.
