Dies intermittinley while driving???
Well this afternoon the kids 8 would not start at school. When she called me my first thought was FLOODING. Well by the time I got to town my 21yrold son got it going said it was acting like it needed gas. Well they took it out for some hard driving and all was well then about 10 mins later it would just die while going down the road then it would restart and it would do this off and on at the stop signs. Now we think it might be the fuel pump? Well now we have it up at our shop and is just sitting there it would run for a bit and then it does it again. Is there an easy way to check the fuel sytem to see if the pump is working? And just where is it located ?
Well gang what do you think? It is a 04' rx8 with auto and 50k miles.
Thanks Gang for the help that will be forth coming!!!

No! Not yet I was thinking along those lines and to drop a new fuel filter also. When I checked the tranny fluid it was dark what do you think about that. We have had this since April and this is the first indication of any trouble yet.

Where is the best place to pick the coils wires and plugs up? Here on the forum?

The fuel filter and fuel pump are one unit. You would have to buy a new fuel pump. It would be a good idea to get your tranny fluid flushed.
There are a few places to pick up ignition coils and spark plugs. I would also replace your spark plug wires.
Race Roots has a complete ignition bundle that includes New MSD spark plug wires as well as leading and trailing Spark plugs. Not to forget Genuine Mazda Ignition Coils as well! For $300

The oem ignition coils are the weak point in the ignition system. BHR has an upgraded ignition system for the rx8.
The BHR kit is a litte more money but well worth the price. OEM coils tend to die around 30k miles. The BHR Ignition Kit is $560 with new spark plugs.

I may have said it wrong but some aftermarket intakes were causing RX8s to die on the road at low rpms but would START BACK UP. I had bought a K&N intake for my 04' about 6 years ago and drove it to RENO which is about 6hrs away. Seemed great all the way there but every once in a while it would die at a stop light. I could always restart it though. I than learned about RacingBeat when they first came out with the REVi intake combo. So I got rid of the stupid intake and went with the better one. The reason I found out that it was dying was because of not using the mesh screen before the MAF, so mine was a simple fix.
I think the first place to check before tearing your passenger seat out is to check if the MAF is dirty and if you have never changed your coils. Now is definitely the time to change those with new plugs and wires. If your still having problems, than check the Fuel system.

IT is stock only mods are the HID fog lights and Ipod hook-up. When we bought it had a TORNADO in the intake and a K/N filter. It is a Gt model with an auto tranny.

You dont still have the Tornado do you? Ive read in some of these threads that it acts more as an obstruction than anything. The guy trying to advertise them here was getting blasted pretty good.

Well we did clean the K/N a while back and since I have used these since the 70's real careful with the oil. I find it a little hard to belive that the coils would be shooting craps since it will restart after you let the key on for a bit. But from all I have read here seems I might be looking into new wires, coils, and plugs to start with. Hell won't hurt a thing and after all 6yrs old!

Before I got my coils replaced, it would take me about three seconds of trying to turn the engine over and that was with a new starter. The new starter was great for the first two weeks. So I took it to a Mazda mechanic and after scratching their heads for most the day, they called me back saying two coils were pretty much dead and the third was highly corroded. So I was basically somehow running off just one good coil. When I would rev around 6500 prior to the fix, it would act as if i was redlining unless i reved even more, than it would go away.

This is not an electrical issue.
You said it was running at the shop and just died.
Fuel issue or...............
Check the tornado. It's probably a replica. The replica's have been known to shift and block the air passage. (metal fatigue).

Yep thats right! She tried starting it and would now go, by the time I got home my yougest son(21) got it going said he pumped the pedal a little and ran fine. Well he gave it back to his sister and while going home just died, she called her brother again and it fired right up but he said as he would approached a stop it would die and then if he let it sit for a few seconds would fire right up then he would go again and then die again. Well he got it up to our shop and while I have had to move it around over the last few days (waiting on coils to come in) it has started right up and had no problems driving it around the block. Well now just trying to find a set of plug wires so far nobody has any on the shelf hate to call the dealer!!
Has anybody just made their on set up? I have a bunch of Accell hi-temp wire in the bulk and lots of different end anything special as far as the ends go?
Thanks Gang wro87
