I haven't had that problem yet...but, when my car arrived at the dealer my wife and I were inspecting it and she hollered out "WE CANNOT ACCEPT THIS CAR, IT HAS A HUGE SCRATCH". I walked around the car to her side and realized she was talking about the paint protection strips. I busted out laughing and spent a few minutes convincing her that it was perfectly ok.

The protector strips come off clean - just do it slowly by hand starting from one corner. They can't go back on after being removed, unless you care to reapply some adhesive.

There is no need to remove them if the dirt isn't underneath the actual protectant...
When I wax my car some get's stuck along the edge of the rear guard and looks like it is underneath it.
Take a microfibre (or any soft cloth) and then put you fingernail inside the cloth and run your fingernail alng the edge (you may need a little force) and see if it comes out.
