Exclamation Hello Everyone--***DVD Nav. Question*** URGENT!!!

To anyone that can help me...

I am planning on buying an 8 next week and the dealer wants to know if i want the nav system....my question is this:

1) I was told that the nav system is a DVD based system....is this true?

2) If so, how is it different than a GPS system....

3) Does this mean that if it is indeed a dvd based system, that you have to tell the computer where you are since there is no gps antenna...???

4) Does anyone know of any nice cool aftermarket GPS-nav and DVD player combo system that I can intall in teh car>?

Thanks is advance,

Bob

Lo-tech response... I'm sure the more knowledgeable members will have much more intelligent advice to offer.

1) Yes, it utilizes a DVD 'template'
2) It is GPS co-ordinated.
3) I have no idea where the antenna is located, though..
4) I have it; once I figured out how to turn off the voice when I don't need it, ( she does sound kinda sexy, though) I love it.. ..
See other Nav threads..there's a lot of info here., incl. after market gear.

NAV is one of those "things" for me....

Its absolutely useless; Well for me anyways. As a result there is no way in HELL that I'm gonna pay $3000.00 CND for it. Yet at the same time I want it....simply because its a neat lil gadget. lol

I drove a Lexus before this car, and had nav on that. The Toyota nav systems are the most intuitive and easy to use touch screen I've ever seen, beating Infiniti and MB, and the Mazda one is ok...I feel the voice is disjointed slightly and the joystick takes forever. But nothing beats that screen flipping up...and people going "ooh...ahh..."

from what I read in the manual the antenna is on the rear window, using the same wires used to heat up that window in very cold conditions.

that's why it points out to clean the inside of the rear window only with a soft cloth. if it gets scratched, the little wires might get cut and the antenna will be useless. also ppl on this forum strongly advice not to use metallic tint in the rear window...

Yes, the antenna is in the rear window - which is why the NAV system is not something the dealers can add on. The system is expensive, but excellent. It not only uses GPS signals, but also incorporates gyroscopes in the car, which keep track of the car's position and orientation in tunnels, parking garages or in urban canyons. It speaks to tell you when to turn... after a while, you stop caring what's on the screen and just follow the voice commands. The system never seems to crash, which was a nice surprise. Mine gets confused from time to time, but almost always corrects itself. It's saved me big time several times already... once I made a wrong turn and ended up in a very bad neighborhood... the system got me back on the highway without trouble. When I go on business trips I just grab addresses and away I go.
