so i called mazda...

so i called mazda about whether it was 'healthy' or not for the 8 to redline once a day. the representative said that redlining will only put pressure on the engine and burn the fuel quicker, and he said he didn't recommend it...

Hearing the beep isn't considered redlining is it?

Mazda will have to do better than that to get me to stop.

Mine gets the treatment more than once per day.

What a lamer. If th engine can't handle regular redlining, what's the point? If I want to putter around at 2,500 rpm all day, I'll buy a diesel Golf.

Would you be happy if they said the redline was 8k and the rev limiter was at 9 and you could "redline all day". I would just prefer that the redline was accurate for when you can damage the engine.

I read in an article the renesis motor can got up to 14k before it gets into the danger area of the motor, but they put it at 8500 for safety purposes, sorry I dont got proof of article but thats what I read .

No, 13k is when it blows up, they reduced the redline to 9k to increase engine life.

I had a conversation with a RX-7 "Enthusiast" and he said there is NO problem with these rotary engines handling consistant redlines. They will more than likely burn more oil & gas but that's it. If you get in in the 9k range, don't sweat it, it can handle it! This is coming from a guy who collects RX-7's , restores older ones, and drives them on a daily basis.

That's what I thought they did. Set the rev limiter at a safe place. If you can't rely on the limiter to protect your engine then why even have one?

the shop manager at my dealership asked me last time I went in if mine was burning oil at all and I said nope, not really. He goes "Do you run it pretty hard" and I said yea I drive it the way it is supposed to be driven and he said that from what he has seen the harder they are driven the less oil they burn and the more they are babied the more oil they burn. Dont know if there is any truth to this, but I have had mine five thousand miles and never had to add oil.

find the video, do a search, these 2 guys took a gen 2 with one blown rotar, put it to the redline for 10 minutes, and the car died only because the radiator cap popped off, and the coolant flowed out, otherwise, it would have kept going... find it, watch it, and laugh your *** off

yep 14k is the test rpm. the limeter is set at 9k and the beep at 8.5 ..

so you can safely shift when the limiter stops the flow of fuel at 9k all day! in every gear.

this is my 3rd rotery ... they love it.
your Dealer was full of it like most of them

p.s. the rx8 burns a set ammount of oil.. so did the rx7 .. its not like they use less or more. they always oil the apex seals .. if yours is not buring any oil you need to get it to a real shop soon cause it's busted..

I'm sure Mazda has a pretty nice safety margin built in. Otherwise they'd be seeing (is that spelled right?) alot more "blown" motors. I go redline a couple of times a day...AT LEAST. If I couldn't then I'd be driving something else.

You know, all the Mazda guy said was that revving the engine to redline wouldn't do it any good. He never said that the engine would be hurt. All he was pointing out is that A) the engine would work harder and B) it would consume more fuel. Both are true.

If its not burning oil your OMP could be not working properly. But then again you would be able to hear it grinding when you start up. I'm not an 8 owner, but I do own a 7. And my OMP does work, but I also add in some two stroke oil when I fill up just incase that OMP decides to depart me. It prevented any grinding of the apex seals on start up. Oh and MMO is good stuff too.

you dont need to rev it once a day.. thats just bull.. The engin likes to be driven hard.. Meaning you take it for a festive run once a week.. you dont have to break the law.. just get on the freeway on ramp and take her to 75mph as fast as you can. ... If you already drive it out on the freeway at good freeway speeds..(not 35 mph) then you are fine..

if like me you 8 sits untill the weekend to be driven then I take her out once a week and drive it like i stole it. this means allot of 9k shifts down the freeway and around a few mountian roads.

If you do go out and rev you 8 up to redline , sitting in your garage.. make sure its warmed up first.... But seriously just take it for a good hard drive once a week and youll be doing allot more good.

as with most engiens they get to a point where they well consume less fuel at higher rpms..

for instance when i was driving an avrage of 95mph in Nevada I got almost 2mpg better than at 65 mph. this is becasue at higher speeds it is actully easyer for the car to continue its momentum and travel down the road. of course a tail wind cant hurt either

.....

your dealer is just telling you what he should tell you.. but if you talk to a good Rotery engin builder.. that races them .. he will tell you what we have all said. Rev it up baby..

When I downloaded the video, the file was called "pop.wmv", and it was 27,800 kb. If you're lucky, there may still be a link to it here.

The car in the video was an RX-7 with 121,000 miles and a blown rotor. The guys decided to "send the engine to rotary hell." The bet was whether the car would last more than 20 seconds at 9k. The red line was at 8k. The car went 7 minutes without a radiator cap! The video ends with a fire and the rush to find a garden hose. Thoroughly entertaining. Coolant seal was lost at around 3:30... they kept right on going. Smoke at 5:30... they kept right on going. I think you're safe to take the 8 to the buzzer every once in a while.
