K&N Typhoon intake system installed!

Sup all.. was cruisin around town getting my list of parts together for when I do my tranny and diff oil change... anyhow, swung by the dealership and they happened to have the Typhoon in stock. They were selling it for cheaper than Id seen it anywhere on the net, so I picked it up and installed it this afternoon..

I dont know much about cars, so this is kind of an accomplishment of sorts for me. But I got it all in there and its goin great... here are some piccys installed..

btw, it sounds great.. right when you hit around 5k rpms.. nice nice sound..

I got it at Thousand Oaks Mazda, on Thousand Oaks blvd. in Westlake Village...receipts in the car, but I believe it was around 215 after taxes.. lowest price Id seen on the net was 220, but then you gotta pay for shipping too.... so I figured it was a decent deal

ack! ah well... the damage is done :P

I just took it out for a quick 20 mile run in the hills... Noticeable power difference? nah, not really.. I think the difference is way to small to even think about being able to notice it...

The sound is real nice... once you hit 4500 RPMs in 2nd gear you get a real nice purr...

I checked all the connections after I installed it to make sure there was no whistling, etc.... something I noticed while driving around was a semi-audible high pitch whistle almost... I pulled and parked it in neutral with the engine still running.. popped the hood just out of curiousity... that sound was just coming from the filter itself... anyone else with a Typhoon get that noise? Im going to have another look at it tommorow anyhow...

Overall, Id say its a worthwhile investment.. looks cool under the hood, and that purr you get can't be beat..

Any problems with rough idle??? That has been a problem with the Typhoon in the past. May have been fixed by one of the flashes.

One piece of advice (relayed from an earlier thread):

You might want to look into putting some Dynamat extreme on the heat shield. I know that with mine it took care of a sort of buzzing rattle at around 7k (comes from having those big side flaps hanging loose on the shield, one of them may knock into the fuse block at high revs). A potential side benefit is that it's got shiny alumininum backing, and might improve the function of the heat shield slightly, at least for radiative heat, not any real help against convection, though.

One package of the stuff should suffice if you cut it up right (runs about $20 at Fry's, probably about the same or slightly more at most stereo shops).

Also, you don't lose any of the actual engine noise, since that's resonating out the intake pipe, just the secondary rattle in the heat shield.

Cool, Ill look in to that.. thanks for the tip..

I have the one photo displayed with the engine cover off.. but I drive with it on. The heat shield has a couple holes for the engine cover to fit on to, and it all actually sits pretty snug in there; I havent heard a rattle yet...

If it helps against radiative heat, Im all for it :P
