Yea, South Jersey is crazy, u better get Lojack, the Club, and a boot for your cars.
No, just stay out of the city of Camden. There are some nice areas in Camden County and the surrounding counties. Watch out though, it is below the Mason-Dixon line, and the people are really stupid.

Camden is a dive. I used to work in their and I feared for my life. A couple of my friends had some really bad encounters there. If you can avoid Camden do so. The rest of South Jersey is fine.

YES YES YES YES!!!!!!!!!
I work in camden, live in Cherry Hill. Camden has a nice little spot near the Ben Franklin Bridge, where the aquarium, tweeter center, rutgers, baseball stadium, port authority bldg, and L-3 (where I work) is. Other than that it's no man's land. I would watch out for the alignment on your car too, because there's more potholes than you'll ever see, and they don't take care of the roads in winter, by which I mean they don't even plow them usually.
Living NEAR camden is OK, avoid Pennsauken. Living IN camden is a bad idea.

until the day I die
I worked at Rutgers, Camden Campus, for 7 summers. Downtown in daytime is fine. Nightime, off the freeway, or away from "downtown" you dont want to break down.
Outside of Camden City, South Jersey's not a bad place, really! Close to the shore, the Poconos, Philly, NYC, Baltimore, DC. All are within about a 2 1/2 hr drive. I live in Gloucester County, the next county S of Camden Co.; still "countryish", has been a good place to raise my kids.
Visit, drive around. The 8 owners around here are great resources, and MOST of them are friendly.

I work right beside there (Collingswood).
I've lived/worked in several third-world countries. I rank Camden and its surroundings somewhat lower than Sierra Leone during its civil war.
This whole area is old, dirty, run-down, depressing and embarrassing to admit that I'm around here. Whereever you are right now, stay there. It's better.
Forget about trying to keep your car nice - the roads and parking lots are the filthiest I've seen (besides dirt roads). Just getting into and out of the car at work in a "paved" (ha!) lot gets my mat dirtier than a month of driving in Atlanta. The gravel & sand all over the streets and highways will beat up your paint and windshield (I've gone through 2 up here in 3 years).

Do what I do - live in Delaware and commute up I-295 daily. Or take the train, like I do sometimes. 295 is an easy, no-traffic/no-jam rural interstate on the Delaware <--> I-76 segment. Set the cruise at 70 because there are cops all along the way.

I occasionally have to go to Camden for business. Put it this way...I leave my 8 at home and take my little Nissan Sentra. No great loss if that car gets stolen. Seriously though, during the daylight hours when there are a lot of people around you shouldn't have too much of a problem.

I used to live near there before I made a small move to San Diego.
I used to deliver beer there as a summer job. The driver and I got robbed a few times. Not at gunpoint, but they just blatantly stole beer from our truck while we were watching and we didn't do anything but look away and tell our boss.
I'm not taking a bullet for three cases of Steel Reserve!
