Question Anyone in NE switching their Winter Tires?

So is anyone going to switch their winters to summer tires yet? I was thinking this weekend, but I heard once of a winter storm in April...

Not till mid April here in New Hampshire. Can never tell when a late winter storm may hit up here.

I'm thinking of doing it this weekend. We're still getting highs only in the 40s and 50s, and it's frequently below freezing at night, but hopefully the snow is over, and even if it does snow one more time, I can always hitch a ride or *gasp* take public transportation. But I'll be checking long-range forecast come Friday and Saturday.

Doing mine April 16th

http://www.intellicast.com/Almanac/M.../content.shtml

Funny I don't remember this one

"April 19, 1983 -

  • a strong storm system dumped heavy snow in the northeast with 15 inches of snow in northern New Jersey, one foot in Scranton, Pennsylvania, and up to 17 inches in the Catskills of New York."

Not til April

Definately not yet here in 'LakeEffectSnow' Rochester. I got my 8 last march (don't ask, my miata lease was up) and we had a snow storm after about a week later. With the OEM summer tires it took me a 1/2 hr to get out of the parking lot (like a 5deg grade!) and 2 hrs to go 19 miles!. Never been as scared in car before or since, even at Watkin Glen track day with someone else driving!
My Pirelli 240 snows ab-so-lutely rock. They can stay on another few weeks.
I'm looking at some Kumhos to replace the stock re040s.

Not til' April also, since my summer tires are just floating around in 4 dark plastic industrial size bags :p. Gotta find some decent rims for them, since I don't feel like putting them back on the stock rims (winter tires on them). And is damn cold here in NY!!!

I'm not risking anything this year.
We've had 24 storms this season. New England is famous for it's late season storms.
Remember the April 1st blizzard?
I'm gonna wait till after the first week of April.

Joe B:

I do remember that April 1st snow storm! I was on my Miata Club's "Spring Run" when it snowed like crazy! It was pretty hairy trying to keep 30+ Miata's together in that snow all wearing their summer sneaks!!!

Definitely at least mid-April.

If I remember reading right - even without the snow, the OEM tires are supposed to be terrible when it's cold. I want to be comfortable that temps won't go below freezing.

Yup, you read right. My second test drive was on a near-freezing (but dry) day. The back tires broke loose a little just pulling out of the lot. Once they warmed up, they were OK, but still not exactly what I'd call "sticky." The dealer mounted snows on it before delivery. Personally, I'm waiting for low temps at least in the high 30's before I switch back.

I wouldn't have made it through this winter with the factory tires.
The smallest incline would stop me if snow covered.

Look for your last date of frost in a gardening book for your area. NYC is April 15.
Theres something else about that date but just cant seem to remember. Oh well
it must not be important.

I probably waiting until the last week of April. I graduated from college on May 18th, 2002 in Troy, NY. My school had planned to have their first outdoor graduation ceremony in over 20 years.....yeah....it snowed 6 inches, in MAY.

I'll switch as soon as the temps are more consistently 50+ during commuting times. So probably mid april for me.

I like my SnowSports better than the OEM summer tires though. Much more predictable, and MUCH better traction in wet (not just snow)... and still fantastic in dry.

Just too bad they probably melt in summer temps

I was thinking this weekend too..prob give my rotors a coat of paint too. My winters are 235/18, which slows the car down alittle. Its my main reason for wanting them off so bad...
