Why are the paddle shifters important to you, exactly, if you can drive a manual? The transmission will shift at the right spots without your help. And you are aware that the automatics are significantly detuned and therefore slower, correct? Not flaming, just making sure.

don't like the clutch effort? Otherwise I'm really tryin to understand why you would want an auto if you already know how to drive manual. The advantages really seem 10-fold to me

With the 04-05 automatics, I think it's around 7.5 second 0-60 at best. The '06 automatics have the 6-port engine, so there's a bump in power (212 from 197), but that's still laughable, considering the real whp would be around 160.
And the manual has one of the best gearboxes around.

not to mention you get smaller brakes, smaller rims, softer suspension, lower redline (by a lot), a LOT of parasitic loss, one less oil cooler... and its the same price as the manul
Honestly I think 0-60 in the 8 sec - 9 sec range.

^really? Didn't know all that except the lower redline. All the more reason to go for the MT. I can't be more relieved about not buying the AT I almost bought after the test drive. Glad I learned stick shift, too.

i've been meanin to find this out for a while, but what is whp or bhp or whatever? ppl say the rx8 whp is like 170 or something but on the website it says 230 something. what is up with the numbers difference?
is it just for this car? i mean 350z i think is listed at 290hp, what is its bhp or whp or whatever? is it just the rx8 that dips so low?

I test drove 4 RX-8s (2 AT and 2 MT) before settling on one. What I found was the MT was noticably faster and way more fun to drive. The dealbreaker for the AT, though, was while I was on a test drive through some very curvy streets, shirfting with the AT became a crap shoot when the wheel was turned any more than about 45 degrees. If you are concerned about the MT in heavy traffic, don't be. Its a breeze to drive with its long lower gears. There are times in stop and go traffic I can effortlessy drive at a speed fluctuating from 0-45 without ever shifting out of 1st gear.

Gas mileage. Now there's a new and unique and unexplored topic. Since you're interested, city I get 16-18, freeway 19-22.

how is the paddle shifter in the RX8 anyway? because from what I've been hearing in general about paddle shifters is that they are jerky when you change gear and isn't very responsive (especially downshifting)
