First post approval?

I was thinking to prevent spammers and such, is there a way to prevent someone's first post from showing up until a mod approves it? Then subsequent posts (after the first was approved) are normal in that they don't need approval.

i must agree...i may not have many posts, but have been lurking for a while, and it is annoying to see retarded posts by trolls and idiots.

that's a lot of work for our Highly Paid, under-staffed group of Moderators.

I think they should be allowed to post but maybe put some kind of check on their first THREAD. Or just hire moderators who are skilled in the ways of the Force.

I don't see this as a workable solution. We (Mods & Admins) have no way to evaluate the person to know what their intentions are. We would blindly accept anyone that would apply for membership. It would just delay the spam for another day.

You would be able to judge their intentions by the content of their first post, which would not show in a search until approved by a mod. If it involves xbos's, gas cards or sexy sexy ****, the account would be banned and the post wouldn't show up.

It seems overly labor intensive for the moderators to read each new member's first post when spam can already be easily ignored or reported.

I saw this in another forum I joined recently and from what I've seen, there doesn't seem to be any spam on that site. From the spam that's getting through here, it seems pretty easy to tell if they are or not. I guess it depends on the man power available.

Plus they have a subsection to make your first post so it's easier to see if you're just saying hi or spamming.

How big is that site? Did it have a history of Spammer attacks?

It's mostly for Canada...looking at their stats it says they have about 160,000 members. not sure about the history of attacks

Forum stats:
Threads: 473,691, Posts: 5,729,067, Members: 159,265

Edit: Stupidity is also rampant there...someone just made a thread to ask what the weather will be like in NYC this weekend. So it seems like you can't prevent that.

realistically, how hard is this to implement? I don't know anything about how this forum works and the code behind it but could it be done? I know how to do basic coding. Basically the way I see it is this:

Well first you'd create a new sub forum (An Introduction one).

if post count = 0 then you can only start a thread in the Intro subforum.
Mods have to approve those new threads in there.
If it's approved, then post count = 1

if post count => 1 then regular privileges.

Why not add Question & Answer Verification. They could even be based on the RX-8.
