Make location required

Be rather nice if location was a required field when editing profile/creating a new one, as we always end up asking that question to people.

in a perfect intarw3b, you would make it required that people know how to successfully navigate a forum. this would solve so many problems. so many problems.

Well, we can start by making them have to enter their location as a start point

Baby steps..

Don't even have to be specific - just putting in the Country would help.

Hmmm... guess I'm the only one not liking the word "required" in a social setting. There's enough "requireds" everywhere else in life!

Stenobeth. Point well noted.

I do agree with you, however the threads we are generally talking about is when a guy with ONE POST starts a thread "My Car Won't Start".

Nowhere does he/she put the year, mileage, or other info. So, not only can't we help him/her - we can't even say ; "Take it to the Dealer; That's under warranty", because 5 posts later it finally comes out that he is the umpteenth purchaser of a JDM car who has had it imported to Africa!!! (just a crazy example).

So, I agree with you - unless you need help - which is a large constituency of this forum.

EDIT - so that's why I said above - just Country would be OK.

I disagree. I think state/province should be required. Country is too wide an area for N. America or Australia. How many times have you seen someone wanting help or posting something for sale (local pickup preferred) and you don't know where they are.

^+1........think it should at least get to the State(if in the US or Mexico), Province(if Canada), and everywhere else.............I guess could be Country, unless the person decides to add more.

also i know that some ppl when asking to meet up halfway for a sale of a part will lie about how far away they are from the seller and just drive 2 mins from their house

hear about this stuff going on at NASIOC

with stalking and such being a big issue, and the recent killing of one gamer to another I (along with others I am sure) would feel uncomfortable supplying such information. especially on a forum that allows guest browsing.

Nothing stops you from putting false information such as "At home"

i just think the ability to have a free choice and maintaining anonymity is the way it should stay... and if you could put something like "At Home", isnt that defeating the purpose of what the OP is trying to do. if that were the case, the way it is now would be pretty much the same other than requiring something in Location: (bogus or not), versus ability of leaving it blank...

^^^ are you joking Cav? Stalking and gamer murders?! That's a bit of a stretch.
Are you saying that if we combed through your 1100 + posts, we wouldn't find some informatoin about where you're from or maybe a picture of your car with a license plate in it?

Never underestimate how much 'private' information one accidentally posts on a public forum.

It's not like putting the state you're from will allow someone to pinpoint your exact location. Lol.

yeah sorry guys unfortunately there's no simple way of enforcing it and it would just turn some people away. after much thought we're just going to have to leave it the way it is and encourage people to add it when we can

easy fix: make it a field when new people register and then just encourage the rest of us to volunteer it.

win win, problem (somewhat) solved.
