I thought the R3 coils were designed to work in all RX8's as there are plenty of people sending them out there saying that they work on ALL years

Im in New Zealand, I got these from Ebay from Germany as most of the people that post from the USA are asking astronomical amounts for postage e.g. 40$ USD or more.

dont know if they are the same or not, you got them on ebay. btw,, i do have a clue about shipping to NZ.

i have done it for friends in nz that have a rx8.. btw, the japan cars that are in nz break all the rules.. you might try to contact a guy here named brettus.

Thanks for that, but i get the fault with NEW coils not the old ones, The old ones don't through any codes so i might just stick with them until they do, but the new ones I got are the ones causing the p0351 etc

Meh its quit annoying I have to say though, the new coils run sweet and have a heap more get up and go (noted at low torque e.g. at takeoff) so I'm keen to replace the old ones.

OK so problem finally solved so PLEASE NOTE TO ALL JAP IMPORT RIGHT hand drive RX8's owners your car is able to do an individual Coil Check, hence the p0351 p0352 issues. These coils will work fine but will not pass the check that the ECU does on the individual coils triggering the engine light.

This might be the 2003 model only, but I'm unsure

Grrrr

GymmyNZL I have same issue as you. I have US spec car with JDM ECU and fairly new set of coils from advance auto parts. Coils didn't produce check engine light with stock US ECU.

However when I put JDM ECU in the car I got codes for all 4. I bought coil tester and I tested all 4 coils and they work fine producing strong spark.

I also checked with mazda and coils are same for both S1 and S2 engine so that is not it.

The only thing I can think of is JDM ecu will throw code with any coil except the oem one. I wonder if there are any cars with BHR combo and JDM ecu..do they get bad coil codes even if their coils are working properly?

Sorry to necro this (again)

I just finished installing a brand new set of BHR coils and got the quad CEL p01351-p0354. Type-S '04 JDM, 51,000km. New Zealand used, one prior owner.

Cleared them for now and going to keep an eye on it and see if they pop back up. Charles from BHR warned me that they have had multiple customers install the BHR ignition system on RX-8 with JDM PCM and receive the p0135[1-4] codes ('normal' ?)

JDM RX-8 can detect if you're using stock coils.

Is there any way to emulate the IDM signal that the JDM PCM expects?

I wonder, because it's a little annoying to check CEL before warming down each time when expecting four false positives. I can clear them, but they come back every second ignition or so.

edit: maybe I should start a new thread

Hmm the main issue regarding the ECM is that in the US one they don't actually have these codes, so it will never get triggered . The JDM one how ever do, i suggest that if you get coils make sure the are 0434 as the last set of numbers on them.

I spoke to mazda NZ about it (and surprise they were really helpful so hat off to those guys) they pretty much told me what was happening with the ECM and why it happens, but said the US spec one wouldn't do this as these codes are disabled.

Id suggest that people look around for someone that can program their ECM for them and turn this off or get an AUS or UK ECM and replace it.

same here...essentially we will have to keep scanning the codes in order to make sure some other/real codes don't pop up! grrrr!

An update on this thread. I have a JDM car in NZ, which I have just bought. It had just ticked over 55kms so I replaced the plugs, coils and leads even though it was running fine.

I bought the tune-up kit from rx8shop.com, and the parts were shipped from atkinsrotary.com. The coils were described as OEM, but they were not in Mazda packaging and had the part number was n3h1 18 100 X2A and X2B. Anyway, they worked just fine and no error code. They were way, way cheaper than buying them from Mazda, even after freight and being stung by Customs for GST.

I just ordered some of these coils and this is my experence.

1: The coils worked first pop
2: The were shipped to NZL in record time
3: They were priced great
4: Highly recommend Atkinsrotary, they were very responsive and the shipping cost werent unreasonable.

They will be getting more business from me, keep up the great service guys/gals
