RX-8 Maintenance

I just took my 8 into a dealer earlier this morning for an oil change. The car has 23k miles on it right now and the tech told me that there was a 22k or 25k mile maintenance that has to be done on it. The total price that he wrote up was about 380. Has anyone else had this done?

The owners manual lists the basic maintenance items & intervals. At 23K miles I don't see $380 worth of work. You should ask the dealer where they came up with that quote.

I just got off the phone with them and they said that it is actually the 30k mile maintenance that they recommend be done every 25k miles.

So your paying $380 for an oil change with plugs and an air filter.

EDIT: I was wrong about the filter and plugs, that happens @ 37,000. At 30,000 the manual has them doing just an oil change and LOOKING at a few other parts.

So the service department recommends doing the 30k at 25k interval. Must not have enough work to do there.

? 1. what did you do the first 23k miles..

? 2. the only right answer is you got it used. if so the owners manual is in the glove box... read it... lots of cool stuff there..

if the owners manual is not in the glove box you can download it a mazdausa.com..

you will have to register...

i have saved you at least 500 bucks... btw. i work for tips..

20% of the 5 i saved you is that would be 100 bucks. more than you should of spent... for the total service..

but if you are not a diy kinda guy..

pm me if you need my pp account and other helpful hints..

beers

my dealer also has it's own "recommended" (read: give us your money) maintenance schedule.

I always read off whats in the book to them.

Most dealers will tell you, "you've owned your car for X amount of time, ah that means you need us to do random crap A, useless crap C, and pay for my kids' college D. If you don't do this you will probably suffer from performance loss and maybe even a break down. We have this all conveniently packaged in our sucker special. Pay for your next two times in advance and save 10% now!"

Those dealer maintenance schedules are always BS especially in the first 50K miles. They just charge you 75-100 bucks an hour to look over everything when it takes them 20 minutes MAX.

I can change my oil, tranny fluid, diff fluid, brake fluid, air filter, check my brake pads for 50 bucks and an hour of my time when the dealer would probably consider that a MAJOR service at 75K miles and charge 800 bucks for it. Total scam in my book. The only thing that I would find worth the money on one of these maintence schedules is something more labor intensive like a valve adjustment or changing wear items like idler pullies/belts etc.

If you can get $380 for $30 worth of work...well, you can never sell too many of those!
