Guys: It looks like most of the So Cal Club guys are leaving at around 10:00am on Friday. We'll be meeting up over Griffith Park, L.A. Zoo Parking Lot "C".... hopefully we'll be on the road by 10:20am or so.

All So-Cal folks are welcome to join us for the trek up.

btw, I paid $85. a night at the Motel-6. My friend hooked up a good deal at the Quality Inn across the street also, via the Quality Inn website.

As mentioned in http://track.rotarynews.com/event_schedule.html, what is the "Waiver Form" and is it included in the reg packet? Or is it something we're supposed to print out and bring with us?

Pictures? I'm still trying to figure out optimum placement for track video. Unfortunately it's looking like the best place is on top of the sunroof and although it works great for autocross, I don't know if it will fly with tech.

According to the waiver passengers are permitted. However hand-held anything is not.

Mazda Track day. In the first picture, you can see me after I passed the Ferrari. In the 2 others, you can see me after I passed the other RX-8's.

Ahem...Better check that last picture again Bob...that's me before I got you at turn 9...sorry about that...forgot momentarily that I was not in the advanced group at that moment.

For those that missed it, a fabulous day. Many fine RX8s attended including Bob's very nice looking example. I was one of the instructors which meant I could run all the groups and did...over and over. Did 202 miles of track time in one day, including giving rides to 16 students....very busy day. Last jaunary on a off and on rainy day in a completely stock RX8 (did not even align it) I ran 1:55--153s. Yesterday ran several 1:49s thanks to coilovers, corner balance, sways, half inch more rim and half inch more tire, and a proper alignment.

Ran down FDs all day long...they are great down the straights but in the corners they just did not have the stability of the 8 to confidently carry high corners speeds.

Just wanted to add my two cents.

First, as a first timer, I really enjoyed myself and learned a lot. After getting over the first time jitters and trying to remember all the rules, most of the rules are pretty intuitive. Although I made my fair share of faux paus, like waving cars by at the wrong parts of the track for the C group, everyone was still very friendly and supportive.

Kudos to all the people that put the event together, Berny and all of the others. I could tell it takes a lot of people to pull something like that off, even if you've done them before. I appreciate much more how much skill is involved in driving efficiently and safely. Thanks to Evan, one of the instructors, for taking me out on the track -- I forgive you for starting my 8 with the motor running!

Great day for me and my friends who joined me to take in the action. My friend from Salinas came by with his wife and baby because he was just itching to go out on the track. Unfortunately, my poor driving almost made him up chuck so he passed on a ride in Idaho Todd's Miata. I jumped in instead and had a great time experiencing Todd race around the track. His little Miata can really scoot, especially coming out of the corkscrew where he was really pulling the g's -- my eyes almost went cross the first time through when I wasn't expecting it. Big Thanks to CJ for loaning me a helmet so I could take my friend and my girlfriend out on the track. Both he he and my girlfriend enjoyed getting out there with the sights and sounds from inside a car. I think she understands better why I dragged her up there from LA.

Hey Matthew, did your wife ever make out on the track?

I'd recommend such events to anyone, in any make of car. I learned quite a bit, but mostly I learned how little I know and how much I have to learn to be a better driver.

Again, thanks to everyone who made it happen!

Jesse

Ditto on the thanks...

Ditto on the thanks to all...I was happily surprised by the number of RX8s that made it.

And to my knowledge, none of them had any serious incidents. I know we had one first gen Rx7 into the tirewall at turn 6 and two minor third gen Rx7-meets-wall incidents but the RX8 drivers were pretty clean all day long...credit that extra low polar moment!

Of course I was kidding about passing everyone. In fact, I think I should get a prize for waving by the most cars. It was fun, though, and my last run I got in about 5 near perfect laps. :D

Woh Ya!!!!!!!!!!!!

That was FUN .....

I will post some pics my wife took tomorrow.

And yes.. Let me also say.. Bern "Rotary News" , Cork Sport .....
you guys rock. The day was very well run. and I always felt like I was Safe. and that the others around me were also very supportive and friendly.

Brian , Your set up rocks. and after i waved you by I really got a good handle on my breaking .. following you was a big help. Earlier I was behind the spec Miata.. yea it can turn but boy did i want it to let me pass.. BTW I am all over those coilovers. can you pm a link so i can read the specs... Ohh,, so are you happy with the rubber after you got to run them a bit.. MY crappy Potenza are defiantly a bit older now.. I was doing allot of sliding in the hairpin.

MAzdabob, you are a real hoot. It was great being your paddock neighbor. Sorry about taking you spot that time.. DOH.. and yea,, I saw you in my rearview mirror. to bad you never got in front of me :P ... one more thing.. get the "M" flash for that 8 ..
Ohh and you grill looks awesome in person.

Hey Starbucks.. My wife road with me after you left. She had a good time. She was a little nervous in the Hairpin but once she figured out that I was not trying to drive off the Track.. just making my line she got in to it. However. when the rx7 spun out in turn 3
I heard her Gasp when I stayed in my line and whipped right past.. He was ok too just spun no hits..

The wife took some mp3 movies and some stills.. Ill post that stuff tomorrow..

What a Great Day guys. Thanks again to All... especially Bern.. you are the man.
I want to buy you a beer sometime. Next time you decide to stop in S.B. look me up.

I dont think there were any 8's that took any damage .. I did see one spin out in my rearview out of turn 2.. but her recoverd nicely

Great Day all .. thanks again. Also MAjor thank yous to the Rx8club.com without you I would have never know about this day. !!

Matt Williams

I was pretty happy with the tires. For those that don't know what we are talking about, I was giving the new Khumo MX a spin. The race rims I wanted for this car are not yet being made so I went with a better "street" setup and will get the real track setup later. This "street" setup is SSR Competitions in silver in 18x8.5 and 42mm offset with Khumo MXs in 245/40/18....if somebody explains to me how I get the pics up here I will post some good ones...or just email me. Fits perfect despite the fact that I used JIC coilovers to lower the car 1.25 inches (standard kit with 448 front and 228 rear spring rates. The rest of the setup includes our Racing Beat sway bar combo, and endlinks and a careful corner balancing and alignment (with my weight in the driver's seat!). Tested it at an autocross the previous weekend and though I won the class by more than 6 seconds the car was plowing pretty bad so we went back to the alignment and settled on:

Front:
Camber 1.8 negative
Toe 1/8 total toe out
Caster...as much as you can get

Rear
Camber 2.2 negative
Toe 1/8 total toe IN

Checking the tire temps at Laguna Seca across the hide indicated that it could have used even slightly more negative camber. I typically run 2.0 negative front and 2.5 negative rear on my track miatas and it seems the Rx8 wants about the same...at least with these tires.

The MXs did great throughout the day. Best comparison in feel that I can make is to the Toyo RA1 (to which there is some superficial resemblance in tread design too). Think of the Khumo MX as a RA1 in a harder compound, with all the good and bad that implies. Therefore, not as much grip as the RA1 or any of the true R compound tires, but through a range of temperatures and pressures the tire is very consistent and predictable. While it does not have the sidewall stiffness of the some other choices, the Khumo was more consistent than most over a broad range of temperatures (again like the RA1 on both issues).

Pushed hard enough it does eventually suffer the melted tread block edge issue that the race compound V700 Khumo does but only at the point that the driver is seriously over driving the tire (ie...slower lap time anyway). Breakaway is progressive, ride quality to and from the event was very good, noise is average to low. For the price this is a really nice tire...will be interested to see how it fares over the next few months and how fast it wears, bakes out, etc.
