You're right that the 210 isn't on it. I got lost driving the 210 because it misdirected me. Of course, since I have navigation, I quickly re routed myself. I also noticed a lot of roads in Phoenix that aren't on there.

For me, though, I live in the Bay Area, and I've never had a serious problem with it here. Sometimes, it takes me the long way around, but all the roads I travel on seem to be on it.

One problem I do have with navigation, just a little pet peeve: it doesn't tell you what side of the road an address is on until you're right on it. Yesterday, I was meeting a friend for lunch at a place I've never been to. Naturally, I punch it into NAV. Half mile from the place, I punch the Voice button to see what side of the road it is on. It won't tell me! So I look at the map zoomed in as far as I can. It sort of looks like it is on the left side of the road, so I go to that side. Nope, the voice tells me, "Destination is to the right" just as I get into the left turn lane.

Why can't it tell me half mile beforehand what side of the road it is on, so I can get to the proper lane in time?

Check the "route preview" screen (or something similar sounding on the menu list)

I'm not sure if you're responding to me (about the side of the road question). If you are, route preview does not tell you what side of the road the destination is at. It only gives you a very broad overview of the route you are taking.

AFAIK, the only way to get side of the road info is from the voice prompt. And the prompt only says the side of the road when you're fairly close to the destination. That's fine if you're trying to find a house, because residential streets usually only have two lanes. But when you're going down a fairly busy street with multiple lanes in each direction, it would be very helpful if you knew what side of the street your destination is located.

For example, you're trying a to find a restaurant. It's on a busy street. The map will put a marker on the destination, but it will not say if it is on the left side of the street or the right side of the street.

Despite my complaints about NAV, I use it all the time and would probably never buy another car without it.

1) Unless you only go to work and back, you're going to eventually have to go somewhere you've never been before. Using NAV is ten times easier than printing out directions from Mapquest.

2) Even if you are going somewhere you've been before, it's useful in telling you how far you have to go. I used to live in the Phoenix area and drove there once in this car. Although I know exactly where to go (because I lived there for years), it was handy to know how many miles until you reach your destination.

If I still lived in Phoenix, I probably never would have gotten NAV because 1) I lived there so long, I could find places fairly easily; and 2) Phoenix is flat and the main streets are in a grid that is aligned with North. Very easy to get around.

Since I moved I find I need NAV because 1) I'm new in the area and don't even know where some cities are located, much less streets; and 2) there are dozens of cities in the Bay Area and many don't use a grid.

I've been driving for a long time. I consider the Nav system similar to a map. Maps usually don't tell you what side of the street something is on. When I get near my destination, I look on one side of the street for large numbers for the street address. That tells me what side the building I want is (usually).

When I drive, I usually have the stereo up loud. With the music going, hearing the voice is difficult, besides, I would rather listen to the music . I rely on the map. Somewhere on the nav system's map (I don't remember which corner) is an arrow and text indicating the next thing you should do, and the direction (like an arrow up and to the left). This usually gives enough of a heads up.

The time I most use it is when I drive, traffic is bad, and I need to take back roads.

The other time I most use it is when my wife uses me as her nav system . She has a nav system in her car, but she has me drive first (using the nav system) and she writes down directions.

Yeah the DVD is REALLY out dated. It's at least 3 years old I think. Over 1/2 the places I go to aren't on the map which sucks.

Out of like 8 of the houses I tried plugging in, 5 of them were not on the map. It doesn't bother me that much though, but I WOULD like an update for like 20 bucks. I mean for a bunch of the places I just plug in the closest major intersection and then use directions (from the person I'm going to hang out with) gave me.

It's just kind of a bummer since it shouldn't require that at all.

I do that too. But I have two problems with that: (1) sometimes, addresses are hard to see from the street. (This is more true of businesses than residences); (2) the information is there. I know it's there because the voice tells me what side of the street the address is on. My problem is that it doesn't tell me until I'm right next to where I'm supposed to be.

What you guys are saying is that the DVD Map Update for the Lincoln Navigator works in the RX-8 and is a mere $40.

SO, I can go spend $40 at my local lincoln dealer to get the Aviator update disc and I will have the latest and greatest Map info my my RX-8?

If this is TRUE, please please please post to the Interior, Audio, and Electronics forum because there are a TON of 8 owners pissed off at Navteq and Mazda. Someone who got this to work please reply...if this works, I am going to my local Lincoln dealer tomorrow!

INCORRECT.

navtech has an updated DVD for the Mazda Rx-8. and they want $400 for it.
$200 to upgrade.

which is bs.

If you know something we dont, please post to the main forum. I am more interested in the $40 solution...

the navtech rep i spoke with about 2 months ago told me that there is an updated DVD out, and it costs $400 to buy it.

I say F them. They're in no hurry because the have no competition. They know you have no other place to buy the NAV disk. No matter how much they d!ck around, they know theat once it's released people are going to pay whatever price they set.

You can slam your head against a wall all you want, but if we were able to do something like this -> https://www.rx8club.com/series-i-interior-audio-electronics-24/official-hack-nav-thread-59117/ we wouldn't have to wait for them to get off their lazy asses and do something to help. If we could get something like that going, who GAF if or when they release the overpriced disks?

I think any efforts here may be misdirected. What promises do you have that this isn't going to happen every time there's a new update? And c'mon, $400 for a DVD? Show Mazda/NavTech/whomever that these updates (which will be out of date by the time we get them) are unneccessary and they'll be flinging them at us, most likely at a lower proce.

My biggest worry is that the $400 will be spent and the new DVD will still suck mule. The roads that my NAV can't find were probably first traveled by horses so they should be on the 2002 DVD.
