Bought turbo 8 from CA, anyone know car?
Hey guys, I ended up getting a turbo rx8 from Cali, figured I would check to see if anyone knew anything about the car. Must have been a Repo, 04' grey. Stock wheels, turbo kit installed with turbo removed. Aftermarket fuel rail, looks like different intake also. Just trying to see if the engine had an issue, or why the turbo was removed. Havent seen the car in person, only pics.
Also, if you see anything interesting or know anything about the mods on it, feel free to chime in. I have several high HP cars and know what makes power, but I am new to rotary as far as what mods to do to this particular engine. I know you guys know more whats done to it than I do at this point. Just tryin to research it and see what I wanna do with it.

- Likely:
MAP based ECU - standalone; Haltech
Return - Fuel System; looks like Aeromotive FPR.
- Issues:
- Check for OMP vacuum hoses to be functional
- Downpipe is really close to your LIM
- Turbo size (T66 maybe?) Might be Ball Bearing - but I don't see any coolant lines. Hell I don't see any oil lines either.
- Those small dia pipe transitions are because the space to run through the firewall demands it - no big deal.
- Never seen a UIM that looks like that before - prolly custom? Might mean the drive by wire is gone and been replaced.
All in all; your ECU issues are going to be the worst. The RX8 is tightly controlled by the ECU and it is a PITA to work with.
You can get a new motor; but you cant really port it easily - it is not the same as the older 13B motors.
All in all looks like fun. I would pull it all out of there (incl engine) and see what to keep; you may have better long term success with getting rid of all the previous owners turbo related items.

Do you think the ECU issues will be bad with the Haltech? Ive played with the accel/DFI a little on a boosted v8, thats about the closest for me.
Whats an LIM?
Yep, I agree with pulling it out and checking things out really well the first time, not a big deal there.

GL, sounds like a fun project

Lower Intake Manifold runs down the left side of the engine after the throttle body - RIGHT NEXT to your exhaust downpipe.... LOL.
Get a field service manual (free download) and walk through the vacuum, ignition and air intake diagrams - that will tell you a lot.

Where can I download that?
Im not sure why the Haltech would be such a problem, it has specific settings for the 2 rotor engines, I downloaded the software and played with it a little. Im a total noob when it comes to rotary ignition, so I just need to do some reading on the subject. But this is what the Haltech says about it....

Rotary Trailing Ignition Split Map
Common rotary engines run two spark plugs per rotor to ensure complete combustion in the relatively long combustion chamber. The primary aim of the trailing plug is to reduce emissions, but some minor power gains can be had from properly timing the trailing spark. The Rotary Engine Ignition Split Map allows you to program a split angle between when the leading spark is fired to when the corresponding trailing spark fires.
The height of this map is angle at which the trailing spark trails the leading spark. If a flat map at the height of 10 degrees is set, then the trailing spark will always fire 10 degrees after the leading spark. The Rotary Engine Ignition Split Map is a 3D map that allows adjustment depending upon load and engine speed.
