CA CA black/yellow Plates

the other day i was driving home from school when i noticed a BMW with old CA plates that were Blue and had yellow lettering.

i was wondering how can i get plates like that?
i know it is possible, im just unclear of how the process works. i know you can buy plates on sites like ebay but how exactly does it work? or for better words, how would one use those plates on their own vehicle.

personally, i think having blue/yellow plates on a WB would look pretty sweet!!!

i think you pretty much have to had those originally yourself and keep transferring when you get a different car, or you buy a car that has an old plate. you can't get those from the dmv anymore, altho it may be possible to *buy* them from someone else. the only thing i wouldn't recommend doing is calling the dmv and ask them, 'cuz you'd be put on hold for 2 weeks

i see.
why would it be "possible"... as in what is the catch?

also what is the legality in buying the plate from someone and then ordering a vanity plate with the same letters/numbers... would that be legal? [of course the year and registration sticker would be on the blue/yellow plate

Pretty sure DMV allows some companies to "remake" license plates in DMV styles that you can actually register, as long as you legally own the numbers.

nvm, 2 min of google:
http://cr8apl8.easystorecreator.com/...-/list.htm?1=1
"The California DMV has finally acknowedged us and is allowing us to make 100% legal replacement license plates! As of March 1st, 2008 we will be able to recreate an old California license plate using the exact font the State of California uses on their plates ... under the following conditions: you must have legal owner rights to the plate you wish to duplicate - or you may duplicate a cleared plate after receiving a clean clearance from the DMV. This applies to our fiberglass reenforced plates as well as our .30 gage metal plates. "
