Exclamation california DMV are idiots!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

has anyone in california gotten custom plates?

i finally got the letter from the DMV telling me i can go pick up my plates. so i drive 30 mins to the san clemente DMV. i walk in and talk to the information lady. told her i was here to pick up my plates. she tells me that i have to wait till my original plates are mailed to me before i can get my custom plates!!!!!!!! she tells me to come back when i get my original plates. she asks me when i got my car and i was like about 3 weeks ago, and she says "yea it'll be another month before". the thing is tho, on the letter it says that if i dont pick up my plates in 30 days then they will throw it away. so by the time my original plates arrive, my custom plates will be gone. what a buncha idiots. is it really that hard for them to do make a simple switch of plates?

custom plates in CA

I remember when I bought my second car and wanted to move the custom plates I had from the old car to the new one. Same deal, had to wait for the generic plates to arrive, then switch 'em. But at least I got to keep the plates. Surprised they wouldn't let you hold them since you paid for them.

We ordered special plates for the 8, through the dealer. Let's see if they get it right. We did the same thing with another new car purchase and there was no need to switch the plates. Moral: order your new plates through the dealer, after checking for availibility.

Tribal, what plates did you order?

Thumbs up

LOL, that's funny. Here in Ontario, they just grab a set of plates from behind the counter and give you them (Generic ones).

I wasted my time at the DMV also. I got the same story. You have to wait until the generic ones are received, then come in and pick up the personalized ones that have been sitting there ready to go for the last 3 months. What a waste of taxpayer $.

They put a hold on my custom pates until the end of August, so that they are not returned/destroyed.

Hey Tribal, how's this for an idea? Can you take your Dad's plates, for example, turn them in and reregister that vehicle with your special plates, then when your generic RX8 plates come in reregister those to your Dad's car and register your special plate to your car. The only problem is that your Dad will be driving with rotary plates for a while.

I've had my plate for 5 years, and here in FL they are required by law to send you a new one after 5 years. I received the new one, and it is justified left - not centered. I'm still using the old one.

This will not work. The CHP (and local police authorities) run checks on vehicle license plates while driving. So,...how would your dad explain the reason why his license plates do not match the vehicle he is driving?

Having wrong plates on a vehicle,...is a big no no. It is possibly grounds for a vehicle impound.

But what if it's the same driver, just a different car?

But seriously folks, I meant go into DMV and get it changed (hence my use of the word reregister rather than the word swap). It'd require several trips to those hard working, intelligent and enthusiastic public servants, but if you go to the DMV in San Clemente there's a much, much, much smaller crowd (and they smell better too). I guess those property taxes did some good for them.

No no no, YOU don't get it...He actually has the plates registered to dad's car...dad drives around with "RX-gr8" or whatever on his nissan sentra or whatever until tribal gets his regular plates. Then he can transfer the personal plates from one vehicle to the other. Obviously, dad has to either add him to title on his "nissan" or temporarily gift it & then gift it back when the transfer is done. Nothing illegal, all within jonnny law. Dad's car just acts as a place holder for the plates so they don't get destroyed & the name selection is indefinately unavailable

Save the plates!

Also, some states will also allow a person not on title to actually register the same car....I did this in OH once...which is why they always asked for "title & registration". Here in CA, they only ask for registration when they pull you over. So that would lead me to believe the names have to be the same here, but I'm not sure. Either way, saving the plates is doable, even if you have a little dmv title-monkey work.

I care big time because you got your car from the same dealer a few days before me. I was begining to wonder if they ever turned in my paperwork to the DMV. So my generic plates will be here any day. Hopefully they have not returned my peronalized ones yet.

OMG I GET SCREWED IN THE *** AGAIN BY THE DMV

so today i drive 40 mins to the dmv to get my custom plates. i get in line and its like a friggin circus in there. kids runing around yelling and screaming, babies crying non stop. theres like 20 windows but they decide to open only 3 of em, go figure. so im in this big *** line waiting. so after about 1 hour and 30 mins, i reach the window. the guy hands me my plates. then he goes "uh oh". the name for the plates and the name the car is registered to dont match, ****. the car is registered in my moms name(when i bought it, i was only 17), and the name i used when buying the plates online was my name. so he tells me that i cant put my plates on my moms car. sigh. so now i have to get this thing signed by my mom saying that these plates are for her car.

Tribal, we feel your pain. But before you go back next time, go online and make an appointment. Then you can skip past all the crying kids. Good luck and let us know if/when you ever get your plates.

Amazing isn't it, in a state that BY LAW now gives drivers licenses to illegal aliens PLUS in an FBI sting in EVERY CASE was able to fraudulently get licenses using clearly bogus applications, a law-abiding citizen like you can't get the most basic and simple service. Bummer.

Well I finally got my generic plates Friday. I'm going to the DMV first thing Monday morning. I'll bet they sent back my personalized ones by now.
