I think this needs to be answered!

From the dealership side, a blanket answer is really only what we can expect.... if it is not related... magnusson, etc etc....

But hopefully they are "friendly" about mods that are not related to the issue at hand

let me try to clear up the aftermarket voiding warranty item. If an aftermarket item is added and it causes something else to be damaged because of the item being installed wrong or just becasue the itme was installed it will void that part of the warranty. here are a couple examples taken from past true stories:

a customer installed an aftermarket alarm. when the company installed the alarm they wired it so the window would roll up when set. well they fried the drivers side window regulator/motor, you could see were the wire was inserted into the wire harness. voided the window regulator. warranty

a customer installed an aftermarket radio. in doing so they wired into the ground for the a/c control it would not turn on. voided the controller.

customer replaced intake sytem. in doing so they did not secure a power steering line. the luid dripped on the exhaust caught fire. car was 1 year old. was not covered under warranty because the hose was not secured by the installer. customer had to buy new wiring harnesses, new hoses, and a bunch of other stuff that had fire damage.

customer installed exhaust system. car ran very rough. had a pcm problem, could not verify because of exhaust. pcm was replaced under warranty.

vehicle was lowered. hd damaged catalyitic converter, (damaged internally, a fw minor scrap marks on the exterior. replaced under warranty.

not sure if these help or not. but pretty much everything is by a part by part basis. also depends on the customer too, if you are a good Mazda customer (have a few Mazdas, always goes to dealer for maintenence work, the Mazda will also work with you. also depends on the attitude of the customer, if you go in yelling and demanding when something is not covered dont expect to be helped too much.

Anyway, I had the airbag recall. No re-flash. They told me since they had nothing specific from Mazda to re-flash for poor gas mileage they couldn't/wouldn't do it. Again, WTF?

Bottom line: SANTA MONICA MAZDA SERVICE DEPARTMENT DOES NOT KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT MAZDA'S.
Oh great! I had planned on taking mine in this week for the 15k, recall service and "L" flash. I actually liked the service manager there prior to reading your post.

Just got my "L" reflash today. The dealer was totally cool I got to stand by and watch the tech do it. (after a little persuasion) I also got to see some of the reasons and bulletins that the program offers for getting the reflash.(there are about 10 of them)
some not mentioned here on this site were that they give the reflash for throttle hesitation and one says for low or inadequate power(you could argues we all have that) The tech didn't even know this but he read through them with me and said he learned something in the proccess. It also said for hard starts which is the reason I gave to get them to do it. But maybe if you mention all of these things they'll have to give you the reflash. He also said he hasn't heard of the "M" reflash but that they update the computers on fridays. All in all it may have been the best interaction I've ever had with a dealer service department of any manufacturer.
Maybe they did it cuz I got suckered into that "touch of class" $ 300 detail job but the experience of getting to see the computer screens and watch the download was almost worth it. Best off I dont have to do the brake test cuz I saw it for with my own eyes.

Oops, I didn't mention that.. believe it or not it was Irvine Mazda. I guess they got a new service manager and a whole new attitude. I''ve seen other posts say how bad they were but I had a great experience. They were helpful and courteous. The final paper work said the recalibrated the pcm because of hard starts. They said they just really need a reason to do the reflash. They new manager took over a month ago so perhaps some of the bad reports were from before that. for what its worth, I would highly recommend them.
And btw all of the reports about how great the reflash seem to be true the car shifts between gears smoother and seems to have more pep. I love my 8 even more than before.
