Hahaha Razz. I'd LOVE to take it to the track but it's just that I dont have such money to spend...
The canyons are free!!
I usually go up Azusa and take East Fork to GMR. Then go around down to Route 66.
I didn't know GMR was open... I'm gonna have to go!!! Let me break in my car first hahaha.

Reckless driving ticket $1000.00...
Getting killed on a mountain road.... Priceless.
You could always hit any autocross, for about $30.00 you can hit the same speeds as those mountain roads.

The one thing that you have to consider on those nighttime mountain road runs is running into the nocturnal critters. I don' t mean small stuff like possums, either... more like bobcats, or even deer. Slamming into one of those with your 8 is bad news for both you and the animal... your car will not escape unharmed, and there's the possibility you might end up going over the side if you instinctively react to avoid the animal. Please be careful and keep the speeds reasonable.

From a cruise a few years back.. landed on the roof in a ditch 15ft down off the road.
be careful guys... relevant canyon story...

And yes it can happen to you and your 8... from the SB RX-8 drives.

Here's the record on these local cruises (PLEASE READ KWESCOTT EXPLANATION BELOW)
meet#2 zero83 spun out
meet#4 fc3stech spins out
meet#6 riccio smash's car
So things do happen... and you can get hurt or hurt others! not good!!!
On the guys that say they can't afford track days... I say BS... if you own a RX-8, you can afford a track day!

buzzkill...no offense bern, but you werent at any of the cruises in San Bernardino where those incidents took place. It's kinda like when someone takes a piece of a quote, and misuses it to make their own point. None of those incidents, minus the final one with Riccio were serious in any nature. The two spinouts were in water on a two lane road with no other traffic...and it invovled a crossing of moving water. The incident with Riccio could have happened to anyone on any road. She is very skilled and has been on that road more than any of the other drivers that day. The fact that there was lose dirt on the road was unfortunate for her...but fortunate for us that it happened to a skilled driver as it may have been worse if it happened to someone else in that group that may have less experience in recovering their vehicle from the slide she was caught in.
Now the picture, that is a better use of information, given that it was personal information you were sharing....and like you said...it can happen to anyone. So we all shouuld be safe, whether it be on the track, on a canyon road, or in dodging debri or other bad/distracted drivers on the freeway. We should all be careful. Again, not an attack on you, but for the misuse of the information from San Bernardino.....
It would be great if you pulled that out of your post.

even though i'm against it, i'm no better than you guys. I choose to race on the freeway against cars i know i have no chance against. I would say that it's 10x's more dangerous than canyon racing, more lives are at stake. But in the last couple months or so i've tamed down.

On the other spins and such, it was mentioned to me by folks on the first few cruises that there was some over-exuberant driving taking place in some of those incidents. The point that the incidents happened at all, is enough to let you know that things do happen... now if you told me that all of you spun in the water crossings etc... things would be different. The truth is that driving public roads and especially canyons is unpredictable, and should be respected as such; your incidents on the SB cruises just reinforce this... and no offense taken!
So this being my point, I think that the SB cruise information is very relevant to this discusion.
Cheers,

Heads up for those who share the interest.
Cops in Muholland. They're building a canyon runner database there (hahaha). So, try to take it easy in the Santa Monica mountains or take it somewhere else for a while. Be safe people.

Hi Bern!
The good news is I have my RX8 back, all fixed and shiny, looking as good or better than before.
As for my "mishap", as Kwescott says, I have been on that road many, many times and at higher speeds. I even went back to take a look at the "scene of the crime" the same day as my Meet #6 incident, and all I can say is that any speed above crawl is probably too fast when there is dirt or gravel on the road. I've been back a couple times since, and I'm sure I hit some loose gravel that day. Traction is a wonderfull thing!
As you say, I'm incredibly thankful that neither myself or my passenger that day sustained any injuries, and I'm even more amazed at how well my RX8 held up. It protected us, and the wonderful suspension sure came in handy when it counted.
I plan to continue to participate in the SB meets - and to enjoy many lively drives in my rotary cars in the future.
