the freeway raped my tire
on my way to school this morning, the freeway slaughtered my tire..
during the process of changing it and getting a new one, i saw a few 8s

9:45am - Grey on the 405N approaching the 605
1:15pm - white in the parking lot of the Costco in Signal Hill
4:30pm - BB going south down Irvine Center Dr. btwn Yale and Jeffery

ya, i'm fine. i'm surprised with how calm i was when it happened. i always used to tell my mom that i'd freak out if i blew a tire on the freeway.
the actual popping part happened on the 405N around Magnolia. i heard a big boom, checked my mirrors, my steering, and glanced at my tires but didn't notice a difference. i kept driving and at the point where the 22 spills into the 405, the car dropped down. that's when i saw rubber all over and people stopping to let me by.
i tried to change it myself but couldn't even lift the jack (it's one of those big hydraulic ones). instead CHP, highway service patrol, AAA, and a friend all pulled over and helped me out.
now it's all better and ready for the weekend
ps. what's the cursed section of the 405?

Oh it's a theory of mine.. the part of 405 between 5 and Jamboree. I've had my windshield cracked, and tires pierced in that section. Once I saw a brake rotor-looking metal disk tumbling around in the middle of the road and had to swerve to avoid it. Once my friend was driving in that section and was smacked on the side by another driver who was merging. Worst part he didn't have insurance at the time...
Good to hear you're all right. Were they *stone tires?

the tire was a michelin, but the pressure has been down on all of them for a while and i've been meaning to fill them up. guess they're all better now!

That car rocks. It is called Ariel and can be found at http://www.arielatom.com. 0-60 in 2.9 seconds. Ariel Atom 3 base price is $65,000. It looks like a really fun toy but don't think it is street legal. If it is I might buy one ;-)

I'll have to check your car out when I get back...but yeah...looks like it deflated and then you drove on it...during which the rim chewed the sidewall off...
Normally, most rims become damaged when that happens, they will chip the outer lip, warp, crack, or bend...depending on the material...since it looks like an alloy wheel, it most likely chipped on the lip somewhere...or developed fissures...
I can tell from the photo, that it appears it indeed chipped the lip...AND you have some rubber on the inner fender well which could have been caused by the incident itself...considering that, THAT wheel has been particularly problematic from what you told me...it might be leaking air slowly...
Considering how much drive time you have...AND your style of driving "maximum maxima lena style"...I would definitely keep an eye on it...
Tire failure is bad...good thing you haz teh kart skilletz to pay teh billetz...most other people would have freaked out and lost control...
Good job yo...
