I'm Going to California!

I just booked all my stuff for a business trip to San Diego at the end of March. Any suggestions for things to do while I'm in town?

There is a Mexican restaurant in the Bazaar Del Mundo section of Old Town that is incredible. Margaritas are huge - you can sit outside on the patio; it's excellent. If you want to drive about 35 - 40 minutes north, have breakfast at the Beach Break Cafe in Oceanside (1902 S Coast Hwy) - it is fantastic.

Don't know if you are a fan, but U2 will be at the San Diego Sports Arena on the 28th and 30th.

Don't miss the Hotel Del Coronado (known as the "Del" to locals.) Have lunch on the patio, look at the ocean, and imagine Tony Curtis and Marilyn Monroe in 'Some Like It Hot' sitting on the beach.

Shameless plug: I appear as a ten y/o sitting on the beach in the movie.

Other touristy attractions include Balboa Park and the best zoo in the US located there. All in all, a beautiful city.

We stayed at the Hotel Del when we were there. Great view from the patio - you can get an ice cream cone and sit up there and relax. Walk through the place; it is spectacular.

You will like San Diego. I grew up in DFW. Go to the beach. People from here seem to forget that not everyone gets that luxury year round! Other than that, I find San Diego to be nice but quiet. If you want to go crazy, rent a car and drive up to LA for the weekend. :D

I have a bazillion suggestions for you! Where will you be staying and will you have a car?

Here's some starters:

The restaurant GotZoom mentioned is Casa de Pico. Old Town is a touristy spot, but this place is pretty good. Nice area to stroll around but it gets busy on the weekends. I second his rec for Beach Break Cafe. It's one of my faves.

The Gaslamp Quarter downtown is a hot spot. Lots of clubs, restaurants, shopping etc. Parking can be a challenge but there are several pay lots.

La Jolla is nice, and La Jolla Shores is a great beach. Many good places to eat and shop.

Mission Beach/Pacific Beach can also be fun, depending on your age and what you like to do. More of a young crowd here, and very hectic on weekends.

If you decide you need to go to Tijuana, take the trolley to the border then take a cab downtown. Don't attempt to drive unless you have a death wish or alot of time. Crossing the border (either way) can take forever, and they do drive crazy down there.

PM me if you want more details. Heck I can even be a tour guide if I don't have something going on.

I'll have to race home and watch my DVD copy. :p

Yes, don't drive. Last time I missed the last exit and accidentally drove to Tijuana in a new rental w/o insurance. Arrgghh. It's a lot of fun though. Gas Lamp district and the beaches are awesome.

The Wild Animal Park is cool; I used to live a few miles from there.

And you'll be there in time for the Butterflies & Orchids
(Wear bright clothing and perfume!)

For a top-notch drive and views, the road to the top of Mount Palomar is hard to beat.

Very good suggestion! I have pics of my son with this huge butterfly on his shoulder.

Our zoo is world famous, so that's another good suggestion. Don't miss the polar bears, koalas, and pandas.

Great suggestions.
You could also rent equipment at the beach for Bike riding, surfing, boogie boarding, or rollerblading. You can ride the Giant Dipper in belmont park. Might be some concerts going on at 4th and B, Canes, Or Soma (and others ticketmaster is a good source of info). If you like shopping there are a ton of malls: Horton Plaza, Mission Valley and Fashion Valley, UTC. If you like ritzy shopping you can go down prospect street in La jolla, some nice restraunts there as well. Wine country up in Temecula, which is about an hour up the 15 from San Diego. Birch aquarium is cheaper than sea world, and they might still have their sea horse exibit still around. It's amazing how much I take all of this for granted and end up "board" most of the time

Wow, thanks everyone for the suggestions. I'm staying on Harney Street and I'll be there for one week. I think I'm definitely doing the beach and possibly the zoo one night. What is the word on Coronado beach?

Coronado is the widest beach in San Diego county. This means it doesn't get as crowded as most of the beaches, especially in summer. To get there, you'd go over the bridge from San Diego to Coronado (there's a longer route, but it's not nearly as scenic). It's a quaint little town, lots of retired Navy in the area, but it doesn't have the nightlife of, say, Pacific or Mission Beach. Personally, along with La Jolla Shores and Moonlight Beach in Encinitas, it's my favorite beach (I grew up here and used to spend my summers on the beach in Coronado). If you're doing the bike, skate or board rental, Mission Beach or La Jolla are your best bets, though.

So if you're staying on Harney, you're close to Old Town and the Rosecrans/Sports Arena area. You're pretty central to everything. Here's a link to the local free paper, with listings for concerts, restaurants, movies, things to do, etc.

So I'm here!!!! I've been driving around in my crappy rental since Sunday and haven't seen a single 8 on the road!!! (Granted, I haven't ventured too far from my hotel for fear of getting lost or worse, TRAFFIC!) By chance, and San Diego guys getting together tomorrow night anywhere? I'd like to meet some of ya'll.

Hey, I'm going down this weekend ! Gaslamp is fun. Lajolla has some good shopping. Mission Beach/Pacific Beach is a party scene. depending on how old you are each place is different (more upscale La Jolla, more college age - PB, mix - gaslamp).

Darn, I wish I knew that earlier this week! I'm 24 so I think I'd enjoy gaslamp? I went downtown yesterday for dinner at Hooters, but I didn't feel so safe walking around by myself... petite blonde hair light eyed female in a strange town at night? Don't think so.

I see 8's mostly around downtown; easy to spot em on the freeway.. dunno if any of the owners are on this board... never see any 8's at the monthly RX meets for that matter.

It's Thursday and its a good night for the local spots. Give www.signonsandiego.com a try.
Hope your stay in S.D. was nice
