Las Vegas and Drifting
Hey, I would like to polish my drifting skills (I actually have none). Do you guys know of a place to practice? Any big empty lots around that don't have parking blocks or something similar?

You need something like an airstrip - you might be able to find someone with a private one who would be willing to let you hurt yourself
There is a school for it in Japan - and even a contest to win a chance to go there
Here is the entry port: http://www.castrol.com/tokyodrift
I thought it might be cool to win a chance for my 94 year old mother to try it - heck she does that stuff when she's not trying!

Second thought: You might want to consider what could happen if you mess up your car - Lost Wages is not the best place in the world to break down in...you might even consider shipping your car to California for repairs - but check the good/bad dealer list to make sure you get the right one!

Yeah, I like the airstrip idea. Since there are many private airstrips around here
As far as messing up my car, that is why I was looking for an empty lot.
WTF, you guys are dumb.......So you are saying that since I have never drifted before, I can't start?

I think there was a link to an article on drifting a while back in the general automotive forum or something. They said the 8 is VERY difficult to drift in. It should come up with a search though.

I don't care if you drift, drag, road race or autox just do it at an event so you don't screw up stuff for everyone else.

You do have a lot of private airports out there - but you have to get out of down town Vegas to find them - head out to the local private airport, and ask around - don't start out by saying drifting, just say you want to know where some private runways are...
Quote : Yeah, we don't have mechanics in Las Vegas, just card dealers, slot techs, and maids. Maybe you should think of keeping those thoughts to yourself.
I am glad that you have found a fine reliable mechanic that you can trust to do low cost, rapid, RX-8 repairs in Vegas, perhaps you would like post these as there are many visitors to Vegas who find out the hard way about the not so nice ones...
I had the cheerful honor of living in that fair city and Disney Land for the Geriatric set for a number of years - indeed there are many fine, upstanding, decent people there (Zion in the midst of Babylon), including those that work at and run the entertainment industries, some of whom I owe my life to, so you don't need to be so defensive - but you also have tough cops, and mechanics who will skin your backside - again, I am suggesting going out of town - like most of the local kids do - to find car fun - Find someone your age to play with and ask them where they are doing their thing... It is safer to run in a herd and they can play lookout for you when you do something stupid.

To those I offended by calling you dumb...........sorry. I just think that is stupid for someone to post a reply like the following:
"you can walk until you crawl" or whatever he said.
No $hit, that's why I was looking to the empty lot to try it in.
"go and rent and airstrip"
I don't even know what to say in response to that.
"travel to CA to get your car fixed"
What? How does that relate?
"don't go slide you car around and empty lot when no one else is around because no one will ever be able to rent that lot in the future"
Please, Mr. National Champion. Sorry if I wanted to go and drive my first rear-wheel drive car in a empty lot where I won't hurt myslef, my car, or someone else. Instead of doing that, let me travel 400 miles to CA and pay x-amount of $ to see what drifting is really like. What a joke. Mr. High and mighty, I have spent plenty on time autox'ing with the SCCA and attend track days with various groups. I'm not looking to set up some illegal drifting event. Relax, my 3 or 4 power slides in a parking lot will not bring an end to organized amature motorsports.

If you want just go driving late at night and find some empty parking lot if you want and do your "practice." I have a couple friends that did this but last time they did 3 cops came racing to the lot cuz a security patrol guy spotted them drifting in the lot.
If nothin else comes to mind, go watch The Fast and the Furious Tokyo Drift and after the movie, go ask some guys if they know any lots cuz they prolly have the same question in mind as you.

I don't buy Kool-Aid
DRIVINSIDEWAYS, I told you I'm in Vegas foo. Hey dont go messing around in "empty parking lots". I dout there is much "damage" you can do to a empty parking lot but if the cops show up you will get a ticket. My fried did when he was at the Thomas and Mack center over by Tropicana Ave. It was a big fine bro. You might want to hit up the local D crew. They hit the twisties at night. Know what I mean ...

I never said rent, I said use - many people who own their own planes are kind enough to let you play on an old mine's strip, or known a abandoned strip you can practice on -
Also, you have something available that some serious drivers have found very useful - the simulations over at the Sahara - each 'car' is programed by 8 computers in a very well thought out simulation - and if other users are present they can provide hazards, traffic and competition. You can try out a lot of moves, and learn the consequences for pennies compared to what a real repair job will cost. If you show a serious interest in the computer systems that run it, and if you use it a little bit, and talk to people in a civil manner, the engineer may even let you get some free runs in when he is getting a system back up -
If you disregard this, you will just be demonstrating your own ignorance - and yes you can simulate drifting, recovering, and almost any move a race car make.

who's up for a virtual drift event? maybe afterwards we could try the real thing.. I've been unable to work up the courage to drift a parking lot for months.
btw DOMINION my friend got the same ticket at T&M last winter: gross display of power haha.
