in the world of European cars, bmw is one of the more reliable choices. Probably only second to porsche.
To my knowledge, audi is one of the worse.

to back up my claim...
"BMW is actually the best of the Europeans, and nameplate for nameplate rates ahead of some of the domestic brands. The European stats are being dragged down by Audi, Jaguar, Land Rover and Mercedes-Benz, all with below average reliability."

n54 engine in the 3 series makes peak torque (300ft/lbs) at 1300 rpm and holds it till 5000 rpm. People on the bimmer forum say they can easily shift from 1st to 5th when getting on the freeway.
