Menlo Mazda asking $5k over
Menlo Mazda has over twenty RX8's sitting on their lot and they're asking $5k over sticker. Amazing.

Please don't believe the hype, the car can be had for MSRP if not below. As soon as I sort out my deal between two respective dealers I will detail my particular story fully. In short, one I've had locked in at MSRP since forever and a day, the second is countering for $1000 below MSRP. There is some story I am leaving out, but after I finally get a car from one of these two, I will recount for anybody that is interested.

brothervoodoo, actually I could use any/all info you have right now as I'm trying to negotiate for a purchase today as well.
The $5k markup is direct from Pedro, their internet sales guy. Part of my situation is I'm looking for a yellow which is scarcer than the other colors. But still...

pur nrg,
It's a salesman job to find out whatever it is you like and then play that against you. You have to be willing to let a deal go if it doesn't meet your terms. If you have problems with credit they play that card, if you didn't bring your own financing they play that, etc...
One place that I visited, actually had the cars marked up $7,995 above MSRP, you believe that cr*p!! It happens to be the same place that will deal $1000 below msrp. I should have just bit my lip when I read your post, but I did not. Frankly, I don't have a car yet either, so I am currently talking out of my a*s. So, when the deal is done, I will explain the situation however it happens to play out.

Well in my case at least the deal is gone. Pedro won't budge on the markup. According to the dealer's logic they can afford to sit on their cars while other dealerships sell out at MSRP and they'll have the market cornered.
Very greedy bastards. I hope your deal works out, but at this point I don't intend to purchase from them even if they do offer sticker. Why reward them for trying to gouge people?

PUR NRG, I was told a few weeks back by another dealer that yellow actually is harder to sell, because not as many buyers look for that color. I believe someone bailed on their yellow pre-order at Marina Mazda. You might want to give them a call. Ask for Zion or Ray.
brothervoodoo, I am anxious to hear your story. As you and everyone on this board know, this whole pre-order thing is a flop. My dealer has been very courtesy and decent. I would feel bad to bail on my pre-order. But id Mazda can't deliver my 8 in the promised time frame, I just might take the alternate route and pick one of the lot. Of course I realize if I choose the alternate route, I am encouraging Mazda by buying from the lot and by-passing the pre-order process. :p

The yellow one at Marina Motors is sold (in a mall event, of all things)! It was an
automatic, though, so you don't want that one.
However, Marina Motors is getting more cars (had a silver one being offloaded just as we
were picking up our Ti Grey yesterday). Their policy is never to sell above MSRP so please call them (831-475-3500 ask for Ray or Zion) before talking to the South
Bay dealers.
Our car was at MSRP as agreed on at the pre-order -- no hassles. In fact Zion was so
happy to sell at MSRP (they make about $3k with the 3% holdback) that he bought
my wife and I nice Mazda keychains.
Finally, check out one of links posted to this forum that allows you to look at
all the cars headed to the local dealerships to see where the yellows are going.
Good luck Pur NRG, and you too, Rx Guy.

hmm, seems like you guys up north have it rough. it's ridiculous.
the highest i've seen the markup down here in LA is $2000. this one dealer i went to had 4 or 5 eight's up for grabs, not pre-sold or anything. they had mostly reds and silvers, and one blue 6-speed. and their markup is 1000. when the sales talked to me casually he was already offering to knock off the markup, right from the beginning. so maybe you want to take a drive down here to make a good deal... :D

Folks- be careful of Menlo Mazda. Here is a little recent story about them...
Avout two weeks ago I left them a depo for a 6MT GT w/Nav. Had the VIN number and "refundable on demand", in writing. Car was to arrive this weekend. Ealier this week, I got a vmail from the sales guy.... "please call me back, I have something I want to run by you". I called the next day - turns out he wants to tell me about another fellow coming in and offering to pay the $5k over (I had not agreed on price yet with them) - he proceeded to tell me thay had sold my car to someone else!
This did not help my mood for the day. I responded along the lines of "that's interesting, essentially you've just called me a and told me you are in breach of contract, and have potetially committed credit card fraud (you have to deliver the goods within 30 days of taking a credit card payment)- what do you intend to do to resolve the legal situation you've created for yourself?".
Much back-peddling insued.
Talked to Sales mgr that took the depo - gee somehow the story changed - now it was "we didn't resell your car, we just took a depo from the 2nd guy in case you don't want it - we'd never sell a car we wook a depo on". (but I guess taking a depo for an already sold car is ok in his book - I won't even try to figure out that "logic").
Thurs they called to tell me my car was in. As I was out of town, I could not get there until this morn. So I went over this morn to see if we could close a deal...
Funny - no 2nd buyer anymore in the picture anymore. "We got another car the same color in the shipment and sold him that one". Well, maybe, but I'm pretty sure (but not 100% positive) that the one I had the depo on was the only one in that color with that config, listed in the Menlo mazda inventory as of Thurs afternoon when I checked the Mazda USA web site.
I took the high road, I could have test driven the car, exercised a lot of sales time etc - instead I inspected the car (all prepped and ready for pick up) and told the sales guy that I was not interested at above sticker. The car had NAV that I didn't really need/want - so it was already over what I wanted to pay - but I would have taken it at MSRP (as total MSRP price was not the issue, I just don't tend to buy feautures I don't want).
Sales guy trotted out Pedro (funny no Dave the sales mgr this time - I saw him on the lot and said hello but he seemed to go missing at this point in the conversations) - gave Pedro the same straight story.
Pedro responded with long song and dance about plymouth crusisers, early Miatas, I'll be sorry later etc - winding down with "I can always sell a car at MSRP". I said, "evidentially not - as I'm standing here offering MSRP" - he seemed to miss my sense of humor.
I got depo back and walked.
No big deal to me, antoher car on order to arrive in a couple of weeks (in writting at MSRP and ordered exaclty as I want it). And the other car is from a dealer that has been straight with me the entire time).
But hey, Menlo Mazda kissed easy business goodbye today - someone should tell them the "bird in hand vs bird in bush" story.
Way I figure it, I'm saving $5k and waiting 2-3 weeks - let's see, if I could keep that up, it's an annualized saving of $87k/year - ok, that's sily, but it does put the surcharge in a different perspective.
FYI - the sales guy at Menlo tried - but he was overruled. I harbor no ill will to the sales fellow - and Pedro I suspect is also under orders from above. It was not worth my time to push higher in the organization.
So my recommendation is that if you go shopping at Menlo, be prepared to play games.

gee that's quite a story. sorry to hear that. car dealers can be such rats...
fyi, star mazda in glendale also has an unsold yellow, 6-speed, GT pkg, nav, with chromed wheels and window tint. bad news is that it's 2k over sticker, but given the goings down here it shouldn't be too hard to at least get it to msrp

Menlo Mazda has got to be the dumbest dealership. The guy you're probably referring that wanted two cars is probably me (PUR NRG) Just curious as how you found out about this? I walked into Menlo Mazda one week ago and saw at least 20 fully loaded 8's of various colors. I wanted MSRP for a Tit Grey (for best friend) and Winning Blue (me). Spoke to the internet sales guy who was nice, then spoke to the sales manager who was an idiot. He wouldn't budge on the $5000 markup price and insisted that they would not have trouble selling for that much due to the high demand of the cars. I told him straight up that I'm not willing to throw away my money for free like that and that I can get a much better deal elsewhere. I ended up walking out of there and told them "your cars will continue to remain on the lot with no buyers", and that they will call me later but it will be too late.
Immediately after, stopped by Putnam Mazda in Burlingame and talked to an incredible salesman in KINO CHU. This guy is the "man" Got a great deal on the two cars that I wanted, called my best friend to come over and we both finished our paper work and drove home in our new cars the same evening. If you guys want a great deal on 8's, Ask for KINO CHU over at PUTNAM and tell him that Russell and Alex sent you.
Menlo called back a few days later willing to negotiate a better price but I told them it was too late because I already got my cars and that they will continue to lose business if they continue to be greedy and price gouge =)
I have been enjoying my car for about a week now so I haven't been able to go to the forum to post. The 8 is above and beyond my expectation and well worth its price.

Menlo Mazda :(
Hello,
I'm a local Bay Area Mazda owner. I dont own the rx8, but just recently bought a 6s.
I'm glad that I'm not the only one that had a lot of issues with Menlo Mazda. Seems like they're giving everyone the same song and dance.
After 3 months of test driving, researching, and pricing, I finaly decided on a Mazda 6. I was having A LOT of trouble finding what I wanted in the area (black on black, 6s basicaly fully loaded). I had been talking to Putnam Mazda for weeks, and was just waiting for one to come into the area. One finaly came into the area, but it happened to be at Menlo. The guys at Putnam said they didnt have a very good relationship with them, and probably couldnt get a hold of the car for me. They knew I wanted it really bad, so they sent me down there knowing very well that I could buy it and they'd never see me again.
I walked into Menlo and found the first sales rep and got right to the point. Told him I was ready to buy the Mazda 6. I told him I had heard they had a black on black on the lot and thats what I wanted.
I waited for the sales manager to finish up with someone else then he came out and talked to us. I told him my situation, and that I wanted to work out a deal. He then gave me a rediculous offer of MSRP. I told him thats not the type of deal I was looking for. I then asking him if I could see what the Invoice of the car was. His response was :
"No, this isnt an invoice car. There is no need for you to even know that number".
I replied:
"Of course its not an invoice car. I know you guys need to make some money too. I would just like to find a number inbetween that is good for all of us"
He then gave me the same song and dance he gave you guys. "I can sell a car over MSRP all day long... yatt... yatta... yatta..."
Up to this point I had been very polite and was very looking forward to driving the car off the lot.
I then explained to him that I could go home and look up the invoice within mins. He didnt understand he was speaking with an educated buyer.
After a few more mins it turned into a heated arguement, then I stormed out with my check book in hand.
I called the following day to speak to someone above him, and all i could get a hold of was Pedro from the internet sales. I was informed the guy I spoke with was the Owners son. I expressed the situation I was in, and the bad taste in my mouth the dealership had given me. They tried to work out another deal over the phone, but I just couldnt talk my self into going back there.
Good news is, I got a phone call from Putnam 2 days later. They recieved the car I had been waiting for. I drove over there, told them all about the Menlo thing. They just laughed, and I proceeded to purchase the care at a VERY fair price.
Joe Lu (sales rep), and Al (sales manager) at Putnam are TOP NOTCH guys. I would highly recommend them to anyone looking to by a Mazda.
Best part of the story. Right after taking the car off the lot, i drove down to Menlo, pulled into the lot, got out, walked up to the owners son, and with my sales receipt in hand and said:
"You know what, you're right. It wasnt an invoice car. It was an invoice plus $100 car. Thanks for you help clearing that up"

Yellow at Oaktree
Hi,
I was visiting local dealerships yesterday looking for a Titanium or Nordic Green Sport and, while I didn't find either, I did see a yellow RX-8 at Oaktree Mazda on Stevens Creek. Don't know which model, but I suppose you could call and find out.
Good luck!
