Modified Exhaust ticket in CA

So I left my house yesterday and there was a cop that I'd assume was driving through my neighborhood, saw my car and decided to wait for me to leave or something. I have never seen a cop in my neighborhood for the 3/4 years that I've lived there and he was just parked on the other side of the street. So I started my car, let it warm up and pulled away as slowly as possible not revving beyond 2.5k and then the cop starts his car and follows me for about 1/4 mile and decides to pull me over. He comes up to me and pulls his gun out and says, "Your windows are so dark I couldn't see if you had a gun or anything." WTF!? then he says, "Did you modify your car? Your exhaust looks modified." I was stupid and says yes, i have an aftermarket exhuast. He then goes away to write me the modified exhaust ticket. He comes back and asks me to pop my hood. He sees the HKS intake and says that's illegal! I showed him my CARB certification for the intake but he says its shady because it's not actually on the intake. (i just kept the sticker in my car). he was about to write me another ticket for the intake but he just said he'll be nice and "let me off for that one". what a bitch.

/end rant.

so now i have a question... the ticket is just a fix-it right? all i have to do is put my stock cat and exhaust back on and have them check it? Or can i pay them a fine and move on? any help with these ticket nonsense would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

that sucks.
The ticket is a 'fix-it' but you also have to pass a visual inspection by your local police agency. In other words, put the stock back on and drive down to the police station that gave it to you and they'll "sign off" on the repair.

If I remember correctly: it is not illegal in california to alter the exhaust as long as the modifications are rear of the catalytic converter. I see you have a super cat; though it's not a midpipe, it might fail inspection since it's not CARB certified.

You should be okay though. The Officer is not about to look under there for the cat and either way, you can just say it's the stock unit. (looks stock). If he questions it, point at the O2 sensor.

Good luck. Further instructions should be on the ticket you get in the mail

One more reason not to alter the cat, CA or no CA. Of course in my case, the stock clogged anyway....

Just out of curiosity did you get written up for 27150 VC or 27151 VC? If so I believe you're going to have to have your car refereed. It's no longer a straight fix it ticket.

27150.2. (a) Stations providing referee functions pursuant to Section 44036 of the Health and Safety Code shall provide for the testing of vehicular exhaust systems and the issuance of certificates of compliance only for those vehicles that have received a citation for a violation of Section 27150 or 27151.

Police stations and Chp offices no longer sign this off and will refer to a referee station.

East LA college has a referee station and it's free.

I would rather just put on the stock exhaust and get the fix the ticket signed off. Becuase it's alot cheaper to pay the fix it ticket.

Wow that sucks! Cop in Calie are D!cks. Sounds like someone called the cops on you.
Some a$$ face down the street from me came to my house, talking about my friend that was staying with me and his car (CRX) being "to loud", I told him he is trespassing and will be shot if he dont GTFO my land and friend is serving in the U.S. Army. He just walked away.
Funny thing is when the Silver 599GTB drives out of our street he dont say jack ****. Now thats what I call a punk a$$.
End rant.
BTW, do you have to pay someone to re-install your OEM Cat back?
Hope everything works out for you.

If i remember my friends state ref ticket process correctly. Even after you install the oem parts and ref it.. you still have to pay the fine or ref admission or something.

ouch! sorry to hear about this ven...

was it in arcadia or monterey park?

i've already gotten a verbal warning from a cop once for not having a front plate. (dunno how i talked myself out of that one.) but, yah- the cities are desperate for $ and will do anything to get some extra revenue. gotta be careful on the road.

hmm... was it on huntington drive or whereabouts? i see a lot of cops in arcadia, because i go there quite often. but, i've never known them to harass over something like an exhaust.

is your exhaust super loud or anything like that? i do know that on Rosemead going into Pasadena you have to watch out. lotta cops there pull ppl over for tint and illegal u-turns.

exhaust modification is not illegal by itself, if you put your stock cat back on for the ref then you should pass with flying colors,

sucks about the cop, hes just being an *******, if he came up to my car with the guns drawn i would complain about harassment and stereotyping, and maybe causing unnecessary stress or something, not sure about the legality but i'd definately make some noise at the local PD about it

anyways good luck with ur ticket,

honestly, i just want to get this ticket signed off and done with. i will most likely just put on the stock cat and catback then test it pay $10 and put everything back on again. i believe the supercat is capable of passing smog but i dont know about the sound level.

some of us are thinking about moving the walnut meet (or just starting a new meet) in 626 area maybe around san gabriel. pretty much all of the regulars at the walnut meet are from 626 area or it would be closer than going to 909. so anyone want to plan this meet?

^^ its BEST to put the stock catalyst on...or even leave the high flow cat on if ur confident u can pull under 95db at the referee station. it aint gonna be that loud... and whats the worst that can happen? you fail, and come back for re-test?

i had many exhaust tickets... it got so silly paying 3 times a year that i just said "**** it" and had it ref'd. i passed at 93.5db and got a certificate... which after that, i just laugh off at the next officer that pulls me over and point to the carb certificate.

or if they're nice and didn't write me up for "no front license plate", i just shut up and take the ticket. and go to court with my certificate and pay $10 processing fee.

this was about 5 years ago... should still be the same deal.

get it ref'd. it takes the headache out in the future, and truly lets you get along in life. this will truly make you "legal" and leaving no other reason for the same officer to pull you over for a routine stop. and if it continues, you have a foundation on which to file a harassment complaint...

do it! some arcadia officer's are too much!

stay smarter. many of us don't know that what we have are with-in legal limits, or don't know the law. play their game, and win. look up vehicle code... its in there.
and 95dbz is pretty loud if you ask me...

on another note, here in cali is the reason why exhaust mod aren't the first choice of mod for me... at least from a performance/convenience/cost standpoint for the rx8.

good luck on ur ref test... and i went to elac for my ref test btw. pretty cool guys, the homies let me slide on a gang of other **** cuz they was jockin on my honda.
