Nope. 13.8 mpg on my last tank full.

I don't know what to do. This is really bad.

Thanks for the tip but I'd rather not deal with SM Mazda anymore. Typical Santa Monica dealership bullshit. First is was Mistu, then Nissan and now this. I only have myself to blame for it. I know better than to even bother with SM dealerships.

I may try Galpin and see what they say. I might stop in one afternoon and see if I can talk with a master tech and talk with him about my issue.

It kinda sucks because I'd really like to install my K&N intake but I don't want to until this mpg is "resolved."

310 thanks for keeping us up to date, it is interesting and disturbing to see how poorly mazda has handled this issue.

Lucky for me I have been between 17-19 mpg since day 1.

it's fact that the RENESIS motor has become much more efficient compared to the now defunct older 13b, but one thing's for sure, rotary engines WILL NOT HAVE 20+ MPG.. at least not w/ the RX-8.. huge possibility in the future, but as of right now, high doubt it. sorry.

haven't you guys read about tech articles before..?

you want something w/ 20mpg, go get a civic

I just filled up. Trip meter read 268 miles, and I put in 13.08 gallons of 91 octane. That's close to 20.5mpg.

My 95 Integra got around 27mpg, driving in the same manner and path as I do now.

My Turbo II always got 220 miles per 15 gallon fill, so I'm not complaining.

Well, this upcoming week I'm going to photocopy pages from the service manual relating to "poor fuel economy." It lists a whole bunch of items that should be checked even if no code is tripped.

This should be interesting because I'm going to ask (in the letter) why weren't those things done since I'm complaining about poor fuel mileage.

It seems that Mazda's position is this: If there is no code, there is no problem. Too bad.

Last tank full = 15.2 mpg.
I went 206 miles and put in 13.52 gallons of fuel.

Also, I'm at 3,000 miles and I would like to get an oil change. I don't know if it's worth it to have this done at a dealership and see if they (probably Galpin) will take a look at my mileage issue. Hell, even get the "L" flash or "M" flash or whatever is current...

Seriously, WTF?

How are you guys getting such great gas mileage?

1. Are you driving an auto or manual?

2. Do you have black soot on the tips of your exhaust? Mine is really bad. I think I'm running very rich which (1) would cause the black soot and (2) would cause poor fuel mileage.

I drive 6sp manual, 9500 miles, alternating between 91, 89, and 87 octane from any gas station, air con off, dsc on...

I have black soot in my tips as well, but it actually looks more like muddy sludge that collects on the bottom of the tip.

Of the 75 miles I drive each day, 50 of that is freeway. Half of that is usually sitting in traffic.

I just picked up my RX-8 on Saturday at Galpin. My first tank was 16.8 MPG. I was getting 21 MPG with my '94 Cobra (which I am now selling.) What is the "L" flash everyone is talking about?

I just sent an e-mail request for an appointment with Galpin. I specifically requested an oil change and the "M" calibration. I even listed the TSB.

Let's see if they contact me in the next day or two and acknowledge the "M" calibration request.

TSB = http://www.finishlineperformance.com...1-04-1273d.pdf

My mileage is going to be horrible this tankfull. I've purposefully driven it hard ("M" mode, shifting through the gears myself). I'm almost at 1/4 tank left and I have only driven 140 miles. Yeah, I think this tankfull is going to be in the 12 mpg range... or worse

6 Spd MT, doesnt seem to matter if I use A/C or not, still is ok. A little bit of black on the pipes, but not like its caked on and I have to scrape it off or anything.

I usually drive conservitive, shifting at about 4k RPM, dont go over 75/80 on the fwy. I went ahead and punched it the other day and drove 125 so we'll see how that goes on my next fillup

Not as bad as I thought, but still terrible...

Most recent tankfull = 13.26 mpg

I really hope Galpin Mazda can help with this...
