It's funny because in the AutoWeek article they mention this as well... 87 vs. 91
http://www.autoweek.com/search/searc...47004&record=1
"We also might try a tank of regular octane on the advice of some owners who say the car actually gets better fuel mileage burning regular octane vs. the premium that is recommended. But if regular hurts performance (as Mazda officials predict), you can bet the high-test will be back in our tank in a hurry."

MAZDA... SERIOUSLY. 18 CITY. 24 HIGHWAY?!?! YEA RIGHT. LICK MY ANUS YOU BASTARDS.. I CANT BREAK 15 MPG HIGHWAY SHIFTING LIKE A ANEROXIC GRANDMA.... ITS HORRIBLE. MAZDA NEEDS TO DO SOMETHING. I TYPICALLY GET 13-14 MPG NORMAL DRIVING. AND ITS KILLING ME. MY ANUS IS GETTING EATEN OUT OF $27.00 EVERY 3 DAYS. AND ITS MAKING IT HARD TO PAY CHILD SUPPORT FOR MY 14 CHILDREN. IF MAZDA CAN'NOT RECTIFY THE GAS CONSUMPTION ISSUE THEY NEED TO PROVIDE SOME FREE GAS OR SOMETHING. LIKE THEY ISSUES FREE SERVICE FOR THE LOWER INITIAL HORSEPOWER.. THEY NEED TO DO THE SAME FOR THE ESTIMATED GAS USAGE BEING WAY OFF.. LIKE THE 250 HP TO 238 HP. IGNORANT BASTARDS.

Just out of curiosity, did you buy your RX-8 before or after they publicly announced the hp mixup?
On the same note, did you get any owner reviews before buying the car? They might have told you about the mpg issue at that point.

if you have the m flash and your still not gettin at least 18 mpg city then take the car back and make them give you a new one!!
Tell them its a lemon.. After my 8 was flashed i started getting 18 mpg city ! ... most of its driving as only been in the city.. and it only has 1500 miles.. so it will get better as she breaks in .
REally if your doing that badly after the m flash.. get a new car ~
That hurts my Anus to

Well I had a "partial" fill. Only had to fill her with 7.1 gallons. I did this because I wanted to start keeping an accurate log after the K&N intake install.
I'm fucked. I don't know what to do. My second mileage reading after the M calibration was 13.38 mpg. I went 95 miles (all city).
****, it's not like I redline through the gears. I'm VERY aware of my shifting pattern to see how it effects my mileage.
Something must not be right with my 8. I'm still getting such poor mileage.
****.

I've got to go back to Galpin Mazda for some follow-up service sometime next week. I'll bring it up again (I mentioned it when I had the M calibration) and see if they can do more than "check the codes" like Santa Monica Mazda and their worthless service department (actually department manager).
I've got the shop manual and it lays out SEVERAL things to check even IF there are no codes triggered. Hopefully Galpin will take the time to look into this a bit closer...

Wow! All those mpg and flash stories. All I know is I get between 17 and 21 mpg depending on long distant or city driving. Now that gas prices have come down, I'm back to 93 premium, just 'cos it calls for it, tho there wasn't much difference in the mpg regardless of the octane grade. Now I get a recall from Mazda about recalibrating the oil injection, plus maybe replacing the spark plugs and cat, maybe even the engine. This is my first rice burner, always thought they were so superior in quality. I'm having second thoughts. And yes, are there any trustworthy Mazda service centers.

Well, I decided to start shifting around 4-5000 in my 8 and crusing around 3500 and I've already noticed a marked improvement in the gas mileage. When I can, I'll get a better reading and see what I'm getting.
Also, I've tried some slip-shifting from 1st directly to 3rd.

Would an intake (CAI or SR) help the MPG at all?
