comes on quickly and then shuts down??? Hmmm, does the computer make any kind of loud beeping sound or anything before shutting down?

My guess is either CPU or Motherboard.
-Can't be video card because then it would stay on with no picture
-can't be ram because you'd get a loud *** beep if it wasn't working
- can't be harddrive, would still stay on even if that was going bad.

What kind of computer is it? how old? I think it might be time to pick up one of those cpu / motherboard combos from Fry's.

Mine did that when the fan went bad. it would over heat on start up, so for its own safety, it would shut down. That is all I can think about

open your computer tower and see if the fan works. Rgl is correct that if the fan does not engage upon start up, the computer will protect itself by shutting down.

Wow, so sorry Viper and Speed about your friend. And anyone else that knew Dave. This weekend has been a trip....Friday I found out a friends son had died in a car accident last week, Saturday my babysitter told me her boyfriend was in an accident a couple of days ago in which his car rolled 6 times....now this morning (Sunday) I read this.

I'll still come Saturday.

the fan will not come on. there is no juice at all. the power supply is working i hooked it up to another pc, and it came on with no problem's. that's the reason i believe it's the mother board. where is kevin when you need him, or even xrider.

@ scremn8: you said this is a new unit right? If so, the MoBo (motherboard) might be grounding out. That being the case, pull it out of the case and attempt to post the motherboard on a flat surface using the anti-static bag the MoBo came in.

You said the machine beeps before it shuts itself off. How does it beep? Is it one long beep, or is it one short beep, a sequence of short beeps, one long beep followed by a few short beeps, etc.? Finding out how it beeps will help diagnose what is wrong w/the PC.

Currently, i'm thinking the board is grouding out, which means that it will work once you pull the board out of the case like i said earlier. If that's what's going on, then there's some metal part touching the board aside from the brass standoffs that are used to secure the MoBo to the case.

From what you have described, the board is most likely grounding out. I'm most easily reached on my celly, as i don't browse the 8 forums as much as i used to, if you need more help

the loss of gj is tragic

scremn, like john said:

1. be sure you have standoffs installed between the motherboard and the case.
2. be sure the cpu fan is plugged in.
3. be sure that the replacement power supply is a working power supply.
4. do you have a video card installed?

ok. here's what happened. i was cleaning the etched-in chemical residue spots off my front & rear windshield- the way the dealer showed me, which is using window cleaner and then gently gliding off the spots with a razor blade. (the chemical spots were etched in from mr. clean autodry over time. which, btw is a separate sob story. but, long story short, stay the hell away from mr. clean auto dry.)

anyways. the windshields & moodroof came out fairly well- clean & no marks of any kind, and the spots mostly came off. so, i then proceeded to start working on the rear, passenger-side window. however, to my complete horror, the quality or grade of that glass is nothing like the windshields or moonroof. and, that window is completely ruined now w/ razor marks- even though i glided fairly gently. <sob> sob <sob>

the dealer never said anything about the difference in glass quality or what not. and, i'm not any kind of expert in this area. so, here i was all happy that my windows would FINALLY be clean again- only to discover i've just made a super expensive mistake! <ugh> i think i'm going to have to get that entire window replaced now- 'cuz i don't know what else to do at this point....

the pain is too near, at the moment, so i haven't gotten around to taking pix yet. but, when i can bear to look at my car again, i will try to take some. basically, u can see lines everywhere i glided the razor blade- which is pretty much all over. i can't believe this happened! my guess is maybe the factory-tinted glass for the rear passengers is simply softer than the windshield & moonroof?!!

1. be sure you have standoffs installed between the motherboard and the case. yep
2. be sure the cpu fan is plugged in. from his description, the fans are plugged in
3. be sure that the replacement power supply is a working power supply. this can be tested by using another computer, or if you have PSU tester
4. do you have a video card installed? even if he didn't, the machine would still power up and stay powered up.
a bit more to add....in red above

Ok the details have been changed. we are now meeting up at the church that the funeral was at. It is a streight shot up to the crash site. (it is a much better meeting location).

The meet time is still 10:30, and we will be leaving at 11:00.

A few of us took the drive today just to see exactly where it is at. There is plenty of parking right there, as Daves mom put it "he picked a good spot for us".
