Hello! I am currently in Texas with my '8 and will likely be moving to LA, California in the next year or so. I want to know what all needs to be done to get my beloved RX-8 to pass state inspection and laws there, aside from just restoring all the emissions components. I probably won't drive my '8 as much over there as I do here, and I have time.

Rotary Crawfish
Really just put everything back stock, make sure cat is in good shape and a good tuneup should cover most of it.
What part of Cali? Outside of major cities you may be able to get by with more.

If he's around, @Jedi54 can probably give you some good info.
IIrc, there are very few cats beside the OEM that can pass the CARB tests or whatever they call it there, and they're all over $1k, I think.

if you're moving to Long Beach, I highly recommend a rotary shop in Huntington Beach called NeptuneSpeed for all your needs.
that aside, to get your 8 Emissions legal you will need to reinstall all the emission parts. If you have an aftermarket intake, it must be carb compliant (and have the carb sticker attached). as for exhaust, they will do a visual so you'll need the OEM catalytic converter on, no headers, but a cat back is okay.
Also, the testing is now done exclusively through obd2 so you cannot have an aftermarket tune on the vehicle as the machine will detect it so if you do have that, you'll need to flash back to the Mazda tune.
let us know if you have any questions.

I just came into possession of an '08 from Cali that passed emissions with the OEM cat on it.
Previous owner took it off & put a midpipe on it before selling it.
If you don't have an OEM cat, or for some reason you have difficulty passing, keep it in mind.
As of now, I don't want to sell it, but I might decide to sell it at a fair price to help a member out.

Correct.
California started testing for aftermarket tuning a few years ago ,instant fail of the system detects it.
Can you reflash back to stock, take emissions test, then just load your tune right back when done ?
You'll just need to complete the necessary drive cycles after going back to stock to get all the emissions statuses to ready
