Road Trip - SF to Vegas

I'm taking a road trip from Wednesday night to Sunday. Driving from San Francisco to LA, meeting some people, then going to Las Vegas. Anyone know some roads that wouldn't be too much out of the way to drive my 8 on. I've had the car for a month, have about 2000 miles on it.

Take the 1 from SF to LA and then come back up through Yosimete from Vegas. It is an excellent drive.

For the LA leg of the trip, take 101 instead of 5. Then you can take a number of roads, like Carmel Valley Rd. But the roads that are really a good substitute are Hwy 25 (from Holister) and Hwy 166 to Hwy 33 (through Ojai and Ventura). Depends on how much side road you really want. But you can take 25 to outside of King City, then short jog to 33 in Coalinga, then 33 all the way to Ventura.

From LA, take the 5 back to Bakersfield and take the 178 through the Sierras. Killer road. Take 395 N to Death Valley, go through DV and take the 95 to Las Vegas. I bet the milage from LA to LV this way is only slightly longer. Back roads take more time, as you know. So it depends on how fast you want to get to LV. I assume this is a 2 day drive anyway since you are going to LA first.

The car will be parked and covered for my 2 nights in vegas. I use to live in LA and have been to Vegas many times.

For my trip down to LA I will be driving at night. Max Power, are the highways you mentioned dangerous to drive on at night? Staying up is not the problem, I just don't want something to be dangerously out of the ordinary on the road. Think I might just go 101 and the 1 to LA.

Going into Vegas I'm leaving early friday morning so I'm just gonna straight shot it in to avoid any traffic and get to the pool. On my way home from Vegas I think I'll go through DV on the 395 and then take the 178. I've driven the 178 but not in my 8, that is an awsome road to ride on. Anyone know a route home that will take me through Yosemite?

Thx for all the help everyone.

Which routes did you take? Sorry about not responding to your post, I was out.

The answer to your questions for future reference is that "winding back roads" are not lit at night, can have deer and are generally dangerous if you are driving fast and are unfamiliar with the road. Other than that, the road is in excellent condition and lightly travelled.
