Rotary Insight :D

Hey guys, sorry to be a bother, I been seraching a lot but I just dont' have much time to get onlien now a days, my computer crashed and I'm swamped with work school and other thigns.. i get to come on maybe 2 minutes a day so I can't accomplish much

I keep hearing stories of rotary engine failure, this has scared me.

What oil should I used, I know to stay away from synthetic but I keep getting mixed reviews many RX8 owners say 5w20 just as the manual says, yet many others sy to use 5w30 because it preserves the engine best...

My car only has 15,000 miles so my friend says 5w20 is best for low mile engines...

How many quarts of oil does it need, and through your experience, WHAT BRAND IS BEST?

A couple dudes I met say I must change the oil every 2000 miles.

Also, I want to connect my mp3 player tot he car, I have heard that behind the radio there is a plug for this, how can I remove the radio to do such a thing?

Im almost at 16,000 miles and I doubt the car has had a a tune up uyet, should i do it? if so this includes spark plugs, oil change, oil filter, wires and what else? How much would it run me, Im goign to do it myself as soon as I learn the DIY section :D

What tires are do you recommend? Any experience with different sizes?

Wow.... you asked every queston that the manual answers. If you are that paranoid, take it to the dealer at the intervals suggested in the manual and you will never have to worry about anything. Or trade the car in for something more "worry-free". There will be lots of people that will tell you to SEARCH and stop creating these threads that have been beaten to hell. But my advice to you, if you are that worried, then no matter the excuses you'll have to research on your own, if you want to protect your investment.

Congratulations on opening a can of worms. The 8 is like the hot girl you always wanted to date just to find out she's high maintenance, yet you don't mind spending your money on her because she's a giver. Since I'm in a good mood because its father's day today, I'm going to try to answer your questions to the best of my ability. Keep in mind, these are only my opinions and many other people will have different suggestions and points of view.

There are many people who follow the manual to the T and use 5w-20 for liability issues. If their engines lose compression and fail they want to be able to take it to the dealership and dispute their situation. People argue that Mazda chose 5w-20 to meet emission standards and ignored possible long term damage to the rotor housing and seals. This is why some people use Premix, read up on that. The main reason some people, I think, are afraid of Synthetic oil is the flash point. Flash point is determined by the chemicals in the oil that burn at the lowest temperature. Since the rotary is designed to burn a bit of oil during the combustion cycle, it is thought that the Synthetic oil will not burn completely causing sludge build up (someone correct me if I'm wrong) Then again, the same counter effect of using regular oil is possible. As you'll find in the loss of power DIY for cleaning the engine with Mazda's Zoom cleaner. Some folks use heavier oil during the summer months and vice versa, for obvious reasons. I use Idemitsu Synthetic 10w-30 and Premix and still have normal oil pressure under WOT.

There's no reason for changing your oil every 2k miles, do it every 3k miles if you're religious about changing your oil. Buy the OEM oil filter and 6 quarts of oil to doit yourself. You shouldn't be due for spark plugs yet, check them at 35k. I've replaced them at 45k and they were in pretty bad shape and causing CELs. Save your pennies because spark plugs are expensive. You should also consider replacing your diff and tranny oil. I use RedLine on my car. Oh yeah, you may want to add an air filter to your list. You shouldn't have to worry about your coils until around 60k, but if your car gets a little shaky at low rpms under acceleration its time to replace them.

Make sure the adaptor you buy is compatible with the mp3 you'll be using. I have the DICE adapter since it was the only one compatible with the iphone at the time. Also, beware of the hidden bolt when removing the head unit, you'll find out in the DIY.

Tires is all you and your budget. As far as sizes go I'm sure you can run anything as high as 245/40. That's a lot of tire for the OEM rims though. So if you want big tires invest on the lightest wheels you can afford. Some of the popular brads are Toyo, Falken, Kumho, Hankook, Nitto, and if you can afford it Michelins pilot sport ps2.

I'm out, good luck

Im tryign to find the manuals for the car, i wonder how much mazda will charge.

I have so many questions and not enough time or answers anyone wanna kick it sometime and review ish wit me, i love my 9, wat to take the best care of it.

I put some 5w 30 and it feels like the engine struggles a lil more, with 5w20 its much easier and smooth..

I want to try synthetic, royal purple while my engine is young, but i keep hearing NO SYNTHETIC...

So you can tell the difference when a few quarts of 5w-30 is added
By the way in other country's mazda recommends 5w-30. I suggest you take the time and read the thread about my first engine HERE

FYI you can get a free owners manual on www.mazdausa.com, just click the owners tab and register.

If you want to be safe use dino oil at the recommended 5w-20. I use royal purple myself and have no worries.
