rx-8 gas mileage

and does it kill you or hurt you if someone just want to know how to get a better mileage out of their gas? gosh
and thanks

luck of trhe draw man . . luck of the draw.
It seems 2 RX's that came off the assembly line consecutively can differ in mileage by 5mpg.
This leads me to believe that these cars DO have a soul . . . . so I treat mine VERY nice just in case.
all city driving
18.16mpg overall average after 19 months
Now with the wider wheels . . .about 17.??mpg

see the tires and mods make a difference too, so is good to know what everyone gets so you have an idea.
i am planning to put 245 all around so i know that is going to take off some miles, but hey like you guys said i didnt get it because the mileage right? but is good to know

the gas price is going up, i don't know about your area but my area for 91 octane is $3.7 and i am not very balling, i would like to make more off it.

first good plugs wires and coils. second live where it is flat. third check air pressure. fourth get on hi way. cruise at no more that 75 mpg.. last tank like that i got 23.46 mpg..
notes. use 87 oct.
other notes.. the old mpg threads are just as accurate as the car has not changed since 04.

But to get the best mileage, it's pretty much the same as for any car.
Don't drive too fast, drive with windows up and no A/C on, highway driving gets the best mileage, etc... none of these are specific to the RX-8...

I get about 240-270 miles per tank with 87 Octane here. 50/50 on highway and city streets with the Street Ecu from RB and 275/18 Enkies all around. I shift between 3-3.5k and cruise the highway between 65-70mph. Hopefully that helps guys.

Wow, no wonder all the threads are old; they get dropped like a hairy spider. I know I'm making a zombie here, but I wanted to 'interject' two theories of mine
1) The more efficient an engine is, the more torque it puts out. Efficiency of an engine varies throughout the rev range, and thus you get a torque curve (it would be more apt to call it an efficiency curve). I have to admit, I've only really driven an 8 once, but I noticed that the torque (and efficiency) didn't really kick very hard until about 4 grand. Cruising rpm is right around 4 grand (70 or so mph), so you're really not running at the best rpm for efficiency or fuel economy.
2) For positive displacement and red line, a 3.3 or so liter v6 engine is the most comparable to an 8. When you're done laughing, read on; a v6 engine has six spark plugs, right? How many does the 8 have? Four. What that means is four spark plugs are doing the work of six. Since a spark plug can only ignite so much fuel/air mixture at a limited rate and in an efficient manner, you get an efficiency deficit. Here's something that compels me: the Mazda 787b that was entered into the 24 hours of lemans endurance race had three spark plugs per rotor. Its fuel economy was terrible indeed (between three and four mpg), but pretty dang good considering the piston'd competition and average speed of 160mph.
These aren't proven, or even very convincing, but I find them quite satisfying to chew on. Yes, other factors are at fault (odd combustion chamber shape, incompletely burning fuel cough*needmoresparkplugs*cough, etc.), but these ones stick out at me. Happy headache!

Uhh everyone here says drive slow and keep the rpm down???
**** that rev to 4+ before shifting this engine hates low rpm its drowning choking in its own fuel. Theres no toque down low therefor your wasting more gas. keep the rpm above 3 at all times unless your going like 9mph

I have no clue how anyone is getting decent MPG, I have been averaging 14-16.5 and on a road trip doing a tank at 80-90 mph I averaged 18.5. I knew that was what I was getting with a rotary, but are other people getting the same?

my 2006 (I have only had her 2 weeks) is averaging 23mpg. on the way home from florida I was sitting around 27-28mpg for all 4 fillups.... I shift at 4500-5500 rpm and cruise at 4000rpm... my ride hime was mostly at 80mph in sixed sitting right on 4000rpm...
I live in east tn... all hills and twistie roads.... The area I live in is approx 1000 feet above sea level....
So according to my car most of the theories are wrong.... OH and I have been running 10% ethanol gas since day 1 simply because I cannot find 100% gas around here or on the way home from tampa... It apprently is not hurting the mpg too much....
I also tend to get up to cruising speed quickly and then sustain speed as much as possible... I leave it in whatever gear I was in while decelerating until I have to either stop (pop straight to neutral) or go again, drop to the proper gear and accel quickly up to cruising. never rolling at idle....
I feel that keeping the engine buzzing high is more efficient than letting it bog down, I am pretty happy with this cars mpg concidering how fun it is. my jeep got around 14mpg so this is a cost savings for me... oh and I am running 91-93 depending on the station. no noticable diff....

I've been getting 13.33 and 13.47 on the last 2 tanks using 93 octane... I don't shift at 8-9k EVERY time, but definitely a good amount with my beautiful exhaust note. I would say on average, I shift at 6k or so.

I got 24 going to Tx from La and back at 70-75mph, went to Ga. above Atlanta and back to La. and got 23-18-22.5 mpg depending on speed.
23mpg at 70-75
18-19 at 80
22.5 at 85-90
All speeds checked by GPS, speedo in car 5-7 mph fast.

i get 17 on the streets and 22 on the highway keeping it at 75mph. I shift at 3, and use 87 octane if i know im going to cruise, cause 87 gives you better gas mileage than 91. but if i know im going to be revvin and haulin *** around ill use 91 with some octane booster.
