the issue was definitely Alternator related.
I was able to charge my Optima and it took a full charge, when I started the car I could see the battery voltage dropping and the charge was going quickly.
I recharged the battery and 2 days ago I installed the new OEM alternator.
That thing is a bitch to get out.
Tim (Newcastle) managed to break one of the plastic 90 degreee clips that comes out of the intake rubber accordian so I had a vacuum line that I couldn't plug in.
I fired the car up and the battery voltage was staying steady at 14.4!![Rock](https://www.rx8club.com/images/smilies/rock.gif)
I threw in a new fitting today ($10 part from mazda) and the battery / alternator seem to be getting along once again.
I had the stereo turned up to 26 and the voltage was solid at 14.4![Smilie](https://www.rx8club.com/images/smilies/smile.gif)
My guess is the voltage regluator in the alternator kicked the bucket. One of these days I'll take it apart and trouble shoot
