don't know if you missed my response, so I'm quoting again.
Mostly correct, expect for the air card speed.
My phone is 3G. If I have full bars, I can get up to 1800kbps/600kbps.
At work the building blocks cell phone reception, I only have 2 bars of EVDO coverage.
I get 1100kbps/500kbps
I think the speeds are even better w/ an air card.
So my cell phone contract is up
I kinda asked this question before . . but
Why not just get a netbook for $300. (less than most cell phones)
then pay sprint or verizon $99/month for one of their unlimited access web cards.
Then find a service like vonage (mobile style obviously) that would handle all voice calls.
Wouldn't this give you a full use computer instead of a BS palm or windows mobile POS?
THen you can actually websurf without getting frustrated. And once you are at home, it would pick up your wireless to make for another web machine in home.
Is this a feasible option to a $100/month program for 1/2 the service on a tiny screen from a cell phone company?

Yes, it's possible, but it would be a pain.
To make the netbook your phone, you need
1) Internet Connection - Need to pay for some sort of internet access on your netbook. (Data card from Sprint/Verizon or a phone that is tethered)
2) Some sort of VOIP service, (Magicjack, Skype, something similar)
3) Netbook has to be on all the time. (not sleep mode or hibernating)
Mine has a battery life of 5.5 hrs, but that would drop if it was constantly online.
4) You have to carry a netbook everywhere you go
What you should consider it this.
1) Buy a decent phone.
Doesn't have to be a smartphone, but make sure is has EVDO Rev.A capabilities. (EVDO Rev A is highspeed internet on your phone)
2) Get an unlimited data plan on your phone, so you can tether the phone to a netbook and surf the web.
In reality, what you need most of the time is a phone, not internet access.
I think carrying a netbook as a phone everywhere is not realistic.
Also, many people that have smartphones and use the internet get use to it pretty quickly.
I have 3 different browsers to choose from on my phone, and I can do anything on my phone's browser that the pc browser can do.
I even have Google Maps w/ Streetview.
I can watch Youtube videos.
I can post this message.
They really aren't that bad.

don't forget that a VOIP service, such as Vonage or Skype, requires a rather fast internet connection. like, at least 756kbps DSL in order for the large packets to be efficiently enough sent to and from to have decent voice quality. Using an air card is about half that speed.

dude, my Motorola Q also supports 3G, and at work I get full bars (there's a Verizon antenna on the building's roof), and it does not feel anywhere as fast as that. but then, it could be attributed to the phone's processor and whatnot. but still, it doesn't feel like it's 1800kbps/600kbps.
I'm pretty sure it's Rev0. That's the difference in speed.
I test my speed when I'm tethered and running Firefox on the pc.
Here's a couple of places to test internet speeds from your phone.

according to dslreports, my phone gets 105KB/s, that comes out to be about 756kbps. Mind you though, that my phone had only 1 bar of reception here at home when i performed this test. I will perform the test again when i have full reception.
oh, and what do you mean by "teathered?" I don't understand that.

So i got it backwards?
Just get a full phone, with a unlimited program, and plug the netbook in to the phone when I want a real operating system?
I was kinda hoping to carry just a bluetooth earpiece and leave the cpu in the car. But if it has to stay on, I guess that wont work.

gotcha. no. i didn't do that. i just used my phone's browser.
btw, what kind of software is needed for that to happen?
and another question. I'm looking at getting a new phone (mainly because if i were to send my phone in under warranty, i'd get a refurb which i DON'T want), and i like the storm, but it's rather buggy i hear, and then they're coming out with that new Blackberry Bold, but it's going to be pretty expensive also. so, i was thinking of just getting the Motorola Q9. How is that phone? Anybody hear anything good or bad about it? what about internet connection speed?

Casey, you working out here this week? The nascar guys will be in Fontana and various stores in Rancho / Fontana promoting the race, who is your favorite driver? I just found out that mirna will be at Office Depot, Rancho, helping out with the promotion. Tony Stewart will be there. I wish Carl Edwards was still with Office Depot but they couldnt pay him enough I guess after such a sucessful season.

I used to be much more into NASCAR then I am now. back in the day it was Bill Elliot. though now he does not drive a full season. only a few races here and there.
I guess I dont really have a favorite driver anymore. though if I had to pick it would be one of the veterans like Mark Martin or Michael Walltrip... someone like that..... someone that will never win these days.
I dont know if I will be out in Rancho at all this week.

white zombie and turbonegro are the downloads this week for RB2. I went out and bought GH world tour since there hasn't been very good content for download on RB2 for about 5 weeks now.
Speed....K1 again this weekend, right? I'll bring Fallout 3 with me so you can start cruising the wastelands. You check out the Jericho show yet? It makes me want to play Fallout really bad
