If the car is having transmissions problems, I'm sure you could take it to Aamco or something similar. They can do a drive test and give you an idea. I know they will advise you of parts cost for a "soft" parts list, as well as "hard" parts list. The soft items are easily replaceable components like seals and things like that, where as "hard" parts are metal portions inside the trans case.
Just as info to consider...Mazda charged me for 8 hours to pull apart my trans and diagnose the problem, then had a list of parts totalling up close to 3 grand....almost the same cost as buying a whole new transmission.
You could always change the trans fluid, you could look at the color of the old fluid, see if there are any metal bits on the drain bolt.

what's wrong with the tranny....last I heard, you were wanting to spend some money lowering the car and putting some other things on it to customize it.

these aren't not so much transmission problems, one is simply just a question of the reliability of the transmission. and well, the other thread could be, but the car still works fine. I have a mechanic that specializes in transmissions, and the transmission was rebuilt when it had 129k miles. He charged me $1,500 to have it rebuilt. right now, i'm about to hit 159k miles. probably sometime today or tomorrow. i'll be taking the car in around 162k miles to have the tranny fluid flushed and replaced as my transmission mechanic specified.
these are the two threads in question.
http://www.honda-tech.com/showthread.php?t=2537791
and
http://www.honda-tech.com/showthread.php?t=2509252
basically, the first linked thread is me asking if it is bad to manually shift my AT. i guess somebody here could give me a general answer to that? the second linked thread is about a whiny noise the tranny makes while in gear. doesn't matter which gear it's in, R, D4, D3, D2, and D1, the whiny noise is similar sounding to that of a power steering pump low on power steering fluid and can be heard as the car revves up through about 3000RPM. I'm sure the noise is still there above 3k RPM, but it's muffled out by engine noise and road noise.
this first linked thread was posted late febuary and nobody has answered it.
the second linked thread has 1 dude sorta answering, but just making me ask more questions instead...not helpful at all.

Not to mess things up but with just a few of us going to the drive-in (locally) would it be better to go to Mission Tiki Drive-in http://www.missiontiki.com/#/directions/ I didnt even know there was one in Montclair.
