so last night Jesse and I went to Adams kart track where on Turesday nights they open the track up for time attack with your vehicle. Jesse was kind enough to let me drive his car (and nail a tire... sorry buddy)

It was a lot of fun! from what we could tell Jesse now has the track record at a 52.09. (congrats dude! That was great driving!)

WHY FIX IT IF IT IS NOT BROKE THEY SAY. well because the mazda owners manual says to replace the spark plugs at 60k miles and the car is at 80k on the protege5. so i replace the spark plugs, now the car has a rough idol, so i figure the wires should be replaced with the plugs, well still a rough idol and now a check engine light. so i replace the coil pack, still nothing!?

what is going on? i made sure the plugs are in tight and the all the connections are also tight. basically the car idols at 1000 rpm roughly but every few seconds it drops to 500rpms and then back up. Kind of like my car when i replaced the battery but i never got a light and it returned to normal farily quickly.

Anyone have any solutions?

Loren: first off, are the wires going to the correct plugs? I know this is a lame question but mistakes can happen so I try and rule out the 'little things' first.

OEM wires?
OEM plugs?

is your A/C on when the idle drops?
what CEL code are you getting? If you go to the beach cruise, I can bring my AP and Scanalyser, I'll pull the code for you if you want.

Jedi
-football schedule was released yesterday
-CEL is on the protege5
-wires go where they are supposed to go, very hard to mix them up
-AC is not on
-Bosche plugs (OEM plugs are NKG)
-Autozone brand wires and coils

OH!
so the issues are with the protoge5, not the 8. Gottcha... RX-8 plug wire are pretty easy to mix up. People end up confusing trailing 1 with trailing 2.

- did you disconnect the battery when you did this?

put the old stuff back in and see how it acts.... if it runs good again I suspect you have a bunk set of plugs.... yeah... I said bunk.

well same thing... but I am trying to keep you from running out and buying NEW NGKs jsut to test.
if the stock NGKs start working like a champ, then for $0 you were able to diagnose the problem.

THEN you can go out and buy new NGKs..... make sence?

and for the record.
NGKs are the best rotary plug in caseys book. there is a reason Mazda picked them. I am all for changing plug types and brands in piston engines... but not a rotary.

@Lesper4
Take a picture of the area you're working on and post it.
People need to see how ridiculously easy it is to change the plugs/wires/and coil packs on your car.

picture, ok

well as i was pulling the wires off one got stuck inside it kept breaking (brand new) well i finally got it out, in pieces and put everything back on the way it was. idol is still rough but the cel is gone, i also found out how to reset the computer. but i havent done that.

one last thing i forgot to mention, i poured some fuel injection cleaner into the tank, could that be making it idol rough?

ohhhh my bad. I was under the impression he was working on both cars at the same time... and the RX-8 was the one running funny, but the P5 was showing a CEL....

nevermind. ignore me.

although I would still put the stock stuff back in the P5 and see if it runs better, if it does you still have bunk new parts.... theres that word again.
