I have an 05 AT and the cat was bad. it created so much back pressure that my rotor closest to the firewall is not working and has no compression at all. The Mazda dealer said the engine will need replacing. However its no longer under warranty. My question is why would back pressure blow the motor. I mean I have never once blown any motor in the 20 years I have been driving. Are rotary motors really that weak. Cant they just replace the back rotor and housing for a lot less then the 4700 they said it would cost to replace it. I am almost done with Mazda and rotary engines. this is the second one that has blown. The first was because the apex seals went out. Thats another thing, WTF it with Mazda not just fixing these. I asked a performance shop what they would have done with bad seals on an RX7 and they said just replace them but not the engine. I dont get it is Mazda no longer trying to care about their customers. I think they just want money. Anyway sorry to ramble but what are my options? I think replacing the whole motor is a crazy thing. But when I get it fixed I might be done with this car and company once and for all

you dont have over 100,000 miles do you??
if not, the dealer has to fix it. as long as you have
all the maint. records they have to replace your engine
per mazda. if your over that then you are on your own..

@ jordan, like Screamn says, if you're still under 100k, you should be covered. But, of course this means that you have records for service and that you have not modified the vehicle in any way. With the economy, especially for auto makers, they aren't budging at all, if you haven't met their strict warranty requirements.

This is the reason I am having all my service done at the dealer now, with my new Mazda....I don't want there to be any doubts on the type of service the vehicle has received.

Not modifying this one either...been there, done that...and didn't like the t-shirt.

Ghost (Denward) blew his first engine and found a replacement engine at a salvage dealer. The engine had 30k miles on it....well, he blew that engine and I believe he had that second engine for less than 18 months. His car is sitting in his garage. He has under 100k, but the modifications that he has done to his car keep him from being able to use the Mazda 100k engine warranty.

@ loren, are you moving your cars around...running your 8 for very short periods of time and not letting it warm up? Is the car having cranking issues due to flooding, or low battery?

It may be time for you to consider the new starter. I know I had one flooded engine on my car, and one on Erica's. Never had an issue with the starter or the car being dead...other than when I needed to replace the battery. The 60 dollar Kragen battery was worth the assurance of a car starting in the morning.

jordan started a thread for his problems so I won't post my thoughts here. I'll head over there in a bit.

Loren: something has got to be drawing power from somewhere. I know it sounds stupid but are you sure the trunk is closed? That damn trunk light will drain a battery pretty quickly.
How old is your battery?

If you remember I got the battery, alternator and starter tested at Autozone and they all checked out to be fine. The battery is less then 2 years old and is the yellow top of the Autozone brand.

The car was parked on Friday and not touched till Monday so I belive it is a juice issue and not a flooding issue this time. I would like to get the new starter but from the last experiance at the dealer they will not want to give it to me. It is easy to instand but expensive to buy.

Does anyone close to Loren have a battery charger?
If you've got access to one, borrow it and try doing that again this weekend (not driving it until monday) that way you can plug the car in Monday morning and have it read the battery level.
I'm leaning towards there being a power drain somewhere and that would confirm it.

how much are the new starters?

@ loren, yes loren, a new starter would be easy to install...Casey and I have removed plenty of them when we do the clutch/flywheel installs on the RX8....just a couple bolts, one electrical connector....and there is no way of installing it upside down or backwards....so a no brainer

@ jorge..I have had no luck with battery chargers/trickle chargers...when my batteries go dead, they seem to go all the way...no bringin them back to life. And it is just a headache to keep jumper cables in the car and look for someone who isn't in a rush to get me jumped when I have no juice .

I can understand the frustration Loren is having with his car.

oh, I completely understand the frustration! I was just wondering because some chargers like the one i have can give you a readout of how low your battery is. If on friday it shows charged and monday it doesn't then we know there's a a power drain somewhere.

I'd definitely go with an upgraded starter though, those things make a world of difference.

loren> sorry to hear the starting issue still not resolved. hopefully new starter might fix it.
jorge> ouch- sorry to hear about that. when & where did this happen?
jordan> sorry hear hear that. maybe try a 3rd party rotary shop for a 2nd opinion?

washed my car on sunday, and it's all clean now. 2 weird things though.

1) noticed that when i open 'passenger-side suicide door' there is a loud rumbling vibration noise. it sounds like the exhaust reverberating through the door panel, but not entirely sure. *** do u guys notice this in your cars too?

2) noticed the lower, side rail on both driver & passenger side (ie the long panel beneath all 4 doors) has a weirdo white power finish not- presumably all rock chips? i'm sure most you guys must've noticed this too then, given all our canyon driving... i did a quick polish of the area and it helped a little bit. but since they are very small chip splatters it probably needs to be filled. touch-up would take forever given the surface area... *** would zaino work on this type of thing- since it's a filler?

Gerry: got the ticket in late January on my way up to San Luis Obispo to buy the bimmer. Of ALL the times to get a ticket, it had to happen as I was only 3 exits away from my destination and while driving Emilie's TRUCK!
I pretty much figured my first ticket would be in the RX-8: nope.

$416 later.

I'm trying to figure out what area you're referring to: mind posting a pic?
as far as the door: it might just need to be greased?

@ Jerry, yeah mine has grey pits all along the under side sill.

@ Jorge I think my neighbor has a charger I will ask to see if i can barrow it. As for your ticket I am guessing you were on the 1. I got a ticket up there and the CHP are ruthless. I make sure I drive the speedlimit now. I got mine right as yoru turn off the coast by Gaviota SB and go through the mountains.

@ Keith the revised RX8 starters are $350, and actually I am not fustreated as long as I can jump it from Mirnas car, but she is frustrated.

loren: I got mine not too far north from there, I was on the 101 approaching San Luis Obispo.
81 in a 65.

Have you checked with Paul @ Mazmart to see if he has any used starters for cheap?

ouch- that is expensive... was it a motorcycle cop? i wonder why it was so expensive...

the area with the spotting/ chipping is basically where you would install mazdaspeed size skirts- ie the entire length of the lower side body of the car, basically. i'll try to take some pictures in the sunlight later this week and post them. i remember a long time ago the la zaino guy saying that zaino is a good filler for this type of thing, so i thought maybe it was worth a try...

the rumbling isn't really the door being loose. it sounds more like the exhaust rumbling. but, my engine has had some funny "lapping" noises too, as well as passing gas after i cut the engine. the dealer said they couldn't detect anything wrong. but i think that's just their answer for "we're too lazy to give your complaint any consideration." i may have to drop by JRX and have one of the guys there listen and let me know what they think it is and whether it's worth looking at...

Nope, it was a guy in a cop car. The WORST part is I remember thinking, "there's a hill coming up, that would be a good spot for a cop to sit but it's probably too late at night so I'll just keep driving"
That was mistake #1
I imagine it's that expensive because that's how we're going to balance this state's retarded budget.

AH, the bottom portion of the car. yeah, mine has the same thing yours does but I haven't bothered to do anything about it since it's not very noticable. Zaino is a pretty good filler, I would think Z5 might help. If you want, I can bring some with me to the next SB meet so you don't have to buy a whole bottle.

'lapping noise'? hmmm, not sure exactly what that could be.
As for the sound when cutting the engine off, I've heard that in other rotaries. It's caused by exhaust backpressure or it could even be an issue with your catalytic converter. Unless you're smelling excessive gasoline fumes, you should be fine.

tnx jorge... yah, i wouldn't mind trying it out a little bit on a small area just to see how it works... i don't smell gas fumes- just a buzz for about a minute, then gas being passed...

there is a phone app called Trapster that i have on the iphone- where ppl record where they typically see speed traps. and as u drive it alerts u via audio when u enable it. u should check to see if they have it for your type of smart phone. i'm sure there is something similar to it.

the worst part is my radar detector has an option similar to that but because I was in Emilie's truck and not my RX-8...
I should have followed my instincts and slowed down. Oh well, first ticket ever so I guess the streak had to end some time. Lesson learned.
