Guitar Hero II PARTY? -----AUGUST 18th (SAT)

Just wondering how much interest there would be in another Guitar Hero party this weekend. Can't do it Sunday as there is an autocross event, and it would probably not go as late since most of us would have work the following day.

Post if you are (1) available that evening, and (2) if you would like to come.

How about we have a "put custom parts on Jakes car so he can be in the calender next year" party?

Or a "Sevenstock 10 is coming up and my car still looks the same, I need new mods" party

Wordly Travels----installment 3

These are images from the last memory card for our trip to Europe.

Pic 1: Upon arriving from our day of driving across Germany, we came into Munich right at sunset. This is a pic of one of the bombed out churches from WW2 that were not reconstructed after the war.

Pic 2: The Greatest Street in the World check out the street sign

Pic 3: The Great Temple in Berlin. This was one of the only Jewish structures to survive the "Night of Broken Glass"...basically the starting point for the Holocaust on the Jewish people. After taking power, Hitler ordered the SS to burn/destroy all Jewish businesses and buildings.

Pic 4: Our walking tour group at one of the stops. This was another bombed out building, which was taken over by squatters after the war. I guess they squatted the building so long, that they now only have to pay 1 dollar rent, for the year, for the whole building. Artists live in it, they put funky things all over the place, and even host a beer garden in the evenings there.

Pic 5: River (forgot the name) through Berlin. The TV tower is in the background, the tallest structure in Berlin.

Travels--post 2

Pic 1: The Reichstag in Berlin, Germany. This was a government building which was critical in the rise of Hitlers power. Hitler took power after this building was burned down...he criminalized the group that he said was to be responsible. He started executed those who did not agree with him...and those that were left were nice enough to vote him into power...rather convenient wouldn't you say. This building is the backdrop for that famous footage we often see of Hitler, making that speech infront of the crowd. He was standing on the steps, and at that time, he had a big swatstika on the roof.

Pic 2: Gate into Berlin. (forgot the name...I'll have to find it on the internet to refresh my memory).

Pic 3: Inside a building in the square adjacent to the Gate I forgot the name of. The government commisioned a famous architect to build a hotel. They did not allow him any freedom on his design of the outside of the building, so it looks like many of the other buildings on the street....but he was allowed to go hog wild on the inside. I thought Loren would be interested in these.. This architect, I recall from the presentation by our tour guiude, was the same person who designed the Gugenheim Museum in New York?

Pic 4: Another pic from the inside of the same building.

Pic 5: Monument to those who perished in the holocaust. This is located in Berlin, and the designer did not describe the reason for the design. This monument has no marking, no engravings, no list of people....actually, if no one told you what it was, you may mistake it for a large jungle gym. The tour guide said that he often sees kids playing atop the monument...jumping across from stone to stone.

Pic 1: Another pic of the Jewish monument, this time, from the inside of the structure so you can see the height of some of the stones.

Pic 2: Berlin wall. Upon the destruction of the Berlin Walls (There was an outside wall, an inside wall...and then a nice space in between the two which was called the death strip), they left bricks to mark the site. You can see this brick path throughout the city, marking the location of the two walls. You'd see it pass through the middle of streets, through grass...and upon going through new building that have been constructed where the wall used to stand, there would be a gold inlay in the floor to mark the walls location.

Pic 3: One artsy section of the wall...which just kinda stood there. It is in its original position and has not been moved. The rounded top is missing, and there is obviously no barbed wire or anything that would have been there when it was originally built.

Pic 4: One of the remaining guard towers. This would have been positioned on the inside wall, between the outside wall and the death strip. Much of Berlin history is gone (either by bombings from two world wars, or by renovation), or is being removed...so it is hard to find things like this on your own. We were glad that we went on the walking tour...cause things like this would have been easily missed.

Pic 5: The most preserved section of the wall. It is now protected by a fence of its own..to keep people from harvesting the concrete as souvineers.

Pic 1: A pic from the inside of the wall...the wall is above, and the "interogation" rooms below. There was a nice tribute for this site....lots of things to read and look over. We were tired, hot and thirsty...so everyone in the walking tour decided to go get a beer at a beer garden which was right across the street.

Pic 2: Checkpoint Charlie. The gate at which soldiers passed through upon going in and out of Berlin. This was where US soldiers entered and left from. "Charlie" was a military name...and was the third checkpoint that was passed through. Alpha would have been first, Beta...then Charlie.

Pic 3: Great Hall or something like that....I like to call it the last stop on our walking tour is what is was....we were tired....and ready for some food.

Pic 4: Beer Garden in Berlin. It was located right next to the train station...and boy did the place shake when a train rolled through....

Pic 5: The first RX8 siting on our travels. This first one was in Munich, Germany, right outside a bakery as were leaving our hotel and on our way to the Hertz dealer for our car.

Pic 1: Us in our Puegot rental car. We decided to drive from Berlin to Munich. I think it was more my idea, because we wanted to stop at a town or two along the way,, only had the day to do it, and would have been hard doing it by train and having to cart our luggage behind us everywhere. This was nice though...a chance to just get out on our own, away from the "train people" we have been having to deal with the entire trip so far.

Pic 2: Going uphill in the Puegot, well, at least trying. 110 km/h... like 60 something mph I think. Top speed I was able to get the car up to was 140....85 mph.

Pic 3: Ausfahrt "*** fart"....how you say EXIT in German I think.

Pic 4: The Puegot. Didn't realize that this car had four doors until Erica pointed it out to me.....

Pic 5: The Puegot, our chariot.

Travels--post 6

Last post before lunch....gotta get a number 1 at Taco Bell or something (Boy, I'm glad to be home)

Pic 1: A digital speed limit sign on the autobahn. You saw these upon approaching a major grade up or downhill, or upon a freeway interchange. I imagine that this gives them the ability to adjust the speed limit with weather conditions...fog, snow, rain....Kinda cool. Upon all our travels, we see good ideas like these and wonder why we don't incorporate good ideas like this over here. In China, they had a countdown clock right below the green light, so you knew exactly how long it would stay green for. In Munich, they had the typical yellow, green, red lights...but upon sitting at a red light, you would see the yellow light flash letting you know it was about to turn green. Kinda like a starting light for drag racing. The yellow light would flash...pedestrians would run to get across the street in time...and drivers would start to rev their engines.

Pic 2: An example of the German Forest. We got very familiar with it, because our travel map didn't indicate that our main road to Munich would be closed for reconstruction...and they weren't nice enough to place detour signs. Suffice to say, we ended up backtracking for a little over an hour.

Pic 3: RX8 on the autobahn. It was nordic green and racing a blue 350z. The 8 was infront....but we didn't see this pair for very long...and we don't know the result of the race. I like to think the 8 won.

Pic 4: Rothenburg. One of the cities that we wanted to see on our trip from Berlin to Munich. This is one of the medieval cities along the "Romantic Road"...and is a city that has not touched its history much beyond just trying to keep the buildings from falling down. So, lots of repairs being done in this little city. It has all the original buildings, churches, city walls, the battlement which housed cannons and such.

Pic 5: Another section of Rothenburg city.

...more to come after lunch.

The Architect for this Memorail is Peter Eisenman, another famous architect from around the world.
US architect Peter Eisenman aimed for a sense of isolation and claustrophobia at the Holocaust memorial in central Berlin. The tilting slabs and uneven ground suggest the disorientation felt by Holocaust victims. What destroyed people the most was separation from their parents, Mr Eisenman says.

He also colberated in design for teh WTC competition and the new Arizona Cardinals stadium. (if you are unfamiler with the project the entier field can be rolled in and out fo the stadium)

Yeah....that car just killed me man. When we went into the Hertz, I purchased a 1.8T VW......but as we all have experienced with rental cars, that one wasn't available...so I got the next in line. I wanted to get something with a small turbo, something I could drive fast. This 106 or 107 had no engine...too bad I didn't get an upgrade to the 206, which is turbo charged and kinda looked fun to drive.

When we were in Dublin, we passed a mom and pop car rental place that had a 07 STi and an EVO 8 to rent out....boy, that would have been fun, or trouble (or both) on the Autobahn in Germany.
