I drove this route yesterday, Sunday, August 15th -- 1000 Oaks to Santa Maria and loved it. The weather was beautiful and the road going out was relatively free of traffic. It was the first time I've been able to take my 8 out and give it a good workout. Needless to say, my limited driving skills were a little rusty; I felt the dsc kick in a couple times to save my ***.
Driving impressions? The car can definitely use more low end torque. However, that's the only thing remotely negative I can say about the car. Road feel was great; the car was very stable even on rough pavement at speed. The brakes performed wonderfully and I always felt like I had more braking if I needed it accelerating into corners. I felt connected to the road and car. Never felt nervous about losing it, even when taking downhill hairpins a little faster than I wanted. The sound of the engine was a dream -- above 4000 rpm, the sound is wonderful, yet my friend and I carried on conversation in our normal voices even when cruising at 90mph along some of the long flat stretches after coming down from the Los Padres Forest.
I enjoyed the route planned out. A big hooyah! to bern. I'd like to try drive it again, now that it's familiar. If I don't continue farther north, I'd even like to try coming back the way outlined -- ran out of time yesterday and just had to come back down 101 -- only to run into hellacious traffic in Santa Barbara, maybe because 154 was closed due to a fire.
Too bad I found this thread after the road tour. It looked like it was pretty awesome with all those rotaries driving together. From the pictures, I look forward to participating in the next one.

Gald you enjoyed the cruise... see you next year for the combined trip!
We were on on our way back from Monterey yesterday and we ran into the same traffic... cause: major accident close the Ventura County line... we saw 3 pick-up trucks smashed up pretty well. Took us at least one hour to get through SB... sigh!
