Riwwp, It sounds like its your MAF or cat. My MAF was loose and at 6.5 I would have an extreme loss of power. Tightened it up and problem solved. Plus after that I heard about the cat problem so I got MP so I wouldn't kill the cat and use it on smog day.

So just grabbed a bottle of MAF cleaner, took it out, hosed it down, let it dry, reinstalled it, and...actually more power loss than before (not severely more, just noticable), across more of the RPM range. So maybe this is an airflow problem. Also grabbed a brand new air filter, popping that in next.

On the way home from the auto store, I flogged my 8 as hard as I could given the wet streets and power loss (popped enough misfires to have the flashing CEL go steady), and checked my cat when I got home. No glow, and the highest I could get on my IR thermometer was 290 degrees surface temp on my cat.

Putting in the air filter and checking for air leaks next.

Kane: oh I see. That's right the dreaded break in period. I remember when I first go my clutch I had to wait 1k to smash on it.

I put the new filter in, started up, noticed that it cranked much longer than it did when I first started it today, which prompted some dread since long warm startup times is one of the symptoms of failing compression.

Still have the problem, no change with this air filter.

I feel like I am chasing a gremlin.

morning peeps!

j03: I'm workin' today also so don't feel too bad.

RIWWP: STOP BREAKING stuff!!
Alright, this is a mystery issue that we're going to help you figure out.
We've ruled out coils / plugs / wires. Stupid question but are you POSITIVE they're not loose at the plug?

You cleaned your maf and it got worse?! That's weird. Was the maf completely dry?
you wouldn't happen to have a timing light with ignition pick up would you? (you could test the coils that way to make sure they're firing)

I'm leaning towards an air leak somewhere or the damn cat.
When my RP high flow cat broke up, it was actually very hard to tell that it was broken, car drove like normal most of the time but when I mashed the pedal there was hesitation. When I dropped the cat, the honeycomb was completely broken up.

edit: long start.
oh crap.

Positive. lifted it up, put it on a jack stand, took the wheel off and was pushing the wires onto the plugs with every bit of force I could muster, and no wiggle or shift.

No, I don't. It isn't get much worse, but it was noticable. It leads me to believe that is is an air flow problem, because air flow is the only thing that changed with a cleaning of the MAF. If air flow wasn't at least a contributor, than I would expect that it would have no change or have gotten better.

I'm letting everything cool down right now, but I am dropping the cat as my next step. It's 42 degrees here, which feels freakin warm compared to the 14 degrees last night, so doing this now (and cause of my trip on Saturday)

Yeah, I'm getting that feeling. I have all my maintenance recorded on MazdaUSA, so hoping they don't put up a fight if it comes to that. Have done all my own maintenance for the last 30k. Still have all but 1 of my oil filters though, with the date and mileage on the filter box, as what little backup it possible.

RIWWP: do you have a multimeter? you could test each coil.
I realize they're new but if you got a bad trailing coil that could cause issues pretty quickly. (ask me how I know)

The cat should cool off rather quickly at that temperature but be very careful anyways, hot unburtnt fuel is not fun.

How's the MAF wiring? No kinks in wires, no corrosion anywhere?

MAF wiring is all running through it's stock locations, no changes, no kinks I can find. I can check my "old" (16k) coils easily to see if they are fine or not, can I check the installed new coils without removing my intake again? My god that thing is a pain to remove. What points do I need to be testing, and what value of what measure am I looking for?
