Well, for starters, it does lower the engine temp. But more importantly, it creates a pressure vacuum. Basically the cold air is rammed in through the scoop, which then forces the higher temp air out the back of the scoop. As a result, your intake is getting cooler air and your engine is surrounded by cooler air, so yes, it is very functional.

hmmm, ok i see what you're saying now.
so attempting to make the hood scoop "funtional" essentiall may do nothing...or have a negative affect?

Yeah, I've already got it all basically, just not on the car lol. I saw the re-a catback and thought about it but realized no need, my current setup is JDM enough

I am thinking about tilting my hood again, I don't have the battery box or intake box there so both rad fans are exposed pumping air into the bay without any sort of venting. With proper circulation that air will all just be pumping through the bay and out!

TMIC, fresh air on an intercooler is different than an NA car scooping air into nothing!

Yes, and no. There is one on the back of the scoop, but you have to dremel it out to make it a lil bigger. If you don't, the vacuum affect won't be as strong.

I'm guessing the front hole would have to have a duct that directs the air downward. The hotter air rising + vacuum effect would direct the hotter air up and out the back?

No, the outside is blue, the inside is black. And yes they do, if you don't get it, yours will fade like mine did. Kinda hard to explain the location over posting, if you are not understanding what I mean, you can def give me a call.

More air than OE system provides? Also, the air won't travel from the back of the bay all the way forward I don't think.

Then again everyone has different ideas of what mods work and which don't lol. Just the concept of a scoop on cars is always for air to go directly to cool. Think of muscle cars which first made them popular, pumping air directly to the carbs. But, but WRX you say - air to the intercooler. I can't think of any cars with scoops that lead to nothing, just seems like it would cause more drag if anything (albeit unnoticeable). I believe the MS concept may have had the scoop to aid in supercharger cooling, if that is even possible lol.

But this is my sole idea about it, and they do look pretty sick!

Nope, no air duct needed. The air pressure difference directs the air. It is this plus the makeup of the engine bay that causes the vacuum effect. Just think about it like this: cold air front and warm air front collide. what happens?

Also consider air velocity though. If the air system in bay is fully pressurized, a high flow system, even cold, would travel directly to the low pressure system, IE out the back of the scoop rather than down into the already high/fully pressurized system of the bay. This would leave bay air flow not much different, no?
