I've considered video'ing it, but there isn't an easy way to accomplish that, and all people will say is "get a compression test".
hmmmm stuck apv valves? they generally open up around then. if the engine thinks they are open it dumps more fuel with less air making it rich. the apv's are post MAF.

Might be worth a shot. but what do I know.

Your thinking is right on, I had the same for a while, but we checked the valves with a hand air pump after disassembling the UIM to get to them, and they operate perfectly fine.

My compression was scored at 7.0s and 7.1s about 6 weeks ago, and my power has been steadily dropping since December when my cat failed. I'm convinced it's simple loss of compression, caused by a critical cat failure, probably overstressing the seals. When I got the compression test 6 weeks ago, they said "sorry, it does pass, we tried everything we can to get it to fail, and it just barely passed every test.", and when I said, "so bring it back in a few months?", they said "yep!"

The ONLY other possibility is a vacuum leak, but nothing has ever been found, and with those compression numbers....

Yup. Perfect function on all 3.

Keep in mind, it doesn't come back to full power above 5k, it just gets back to usable power. It still doesn't pull as fast as it used to

Hmmmm I vote you accidentally suck up 3 ounces of 20w50 per service port and keep it idling for 30 mins that should give you some decent carbon buildup.

Hehe, yeah, they have no problem installing various mods like the BHR ignition, REmedy water pump, thermostat...even the Mazmart Oil Pressure increase pellet, which kinda shocked me. The 2 mechanics that are the only ones that touch 8s are both rotorheads, one of them currently owning a 7 I think, the other used to. And the service advisor is intelligent and recognizes the reality of stuff.

The flip side is they were the ones that destroyed the 8 a few weeks ago during post-engine replacement shakedown, when they reused the fuel line and it came free, starting an engine bay fire.

But then, I can trust that they won't make that mistake a second time

It's 90 minutes away, I pass...6? dealerships to get there.

Uh, no. I refuse to defraud Mazda. If my compression fails, it fails, and if they will cover it then I go that route. If they won't, then I get a BHR rebuild.

I've done all my own maintenance recognizing that they may refuse to cover it in the end, and since I've been through a 3 year legal battle over warranty coverage before (with Toyota), I know my rights and responsibilities, and their rights and responsibilities, so I know that self maintenance can't be held against me legally.

But if it comes down to paying for a court battle vs paying to get a BHR engine rebuild, I'll take the rebuild. It's better anyway

RIWWP: I just hope it is in good shape come sevenstock. I don't want a phone call telling me you are broke down in the middle of the midwest.

No worries. I don't have your phone number

But yeah, one reason I am trying to get it taken care of now. It is the only remaining reason why I would have to cancel on the Sevenstock trip.

Letting some chick rub her *** on your genitals is not dancing. I'm talking about Salsa and all variations.

Fair enough. I have no ethical code when it comes to large corporations.

USAA. I get what is basically a version of AAA on steroids for $10 per year per car. No travel discount stuff that AAA members get, but all the actual roadside assistance stuff, only better
